Job Overview

The Local Communities and Partnerships (LCP) team manages relationships with London’s boroughs and local community organisations and groups, as well as runs TfL’s public consultations. LCP is split into areas: Engagement managing stakeholder relationships across Greater London, a Strategy team leading and delivering engagement activity on key transport priorities in London, such as bus priority, Vision Zero and Road User Charging, and a Consultation team. This is a politically restricted role.

We are recruiting for five Engagement Officer roles in the Local Communities and Partnerships team:

  • Two roles in the East Engagement team
  • One role in the West Engagement team
  • One role in the South Engagement team (focussed on the Silvertown Tunnel project)
  • One role in the Strategy team

We have a strong focus on improving our community engagement, and involving local communities in the decisions we make. We can only improve this by our team being more representative of London and the people we serve. We’re keen to hear from people with a wide range of experience and background – whether your experience is in public affairs, customer service or working for a charity; you’re looking to change career later in life or you’ve recently graduated.

We have moved to hybrid working, with you expected to be in the office or attending external meetings at least twice per week, and work from home the remainder of the time. We are based in Stratford, but you can also work in our other main office in Southwark or at one of our satellite offices across London. You will spend time out of the office – whether at external meetings representing TfL, undertaking site visits with colleagues and the community, or attending consultation drop-in events speaking with the public. You will also be expected to work some evenings and weekends, depending on the events and meetings we’re running or attending.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support our relationships with London’s key local stakeholders: boroughs, both at officer and political level; community organisations representing older and disabled people, people from ethnic minorities, and younger people; the local business community such as Business Improvement Districts
  • Engage with these stakeholders on TfL’s strategic priorities and major projects, including road user charging
  • Support engagement activity on local schemes and projects, such as cycle lanes or changes to bus routes
  • Support engagement on TfL’s consultations
  • Represent TfL at externally-organised meetings, such as council meetings or community events
  • Handle correspondence from local councillors and community organisations
  • Produce written briefings for senior managers and leaders, including the Transport Commissioner and Deputy Mayor for Transport

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

Skills

  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people, from the general public to senior managers to politicians
  • Ability to translate and simplify technical information for an external audience
  • Ability to understand others’ agendas and priorities, and explain those to colleagues
  • Ability to understand a stakeholder or customer issue, and how to work with colleagues to resolve it
  • Ability to manage time and tasks well, while being adaptable and responsive

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of London’s politics, and how the city is run, would be desirable but not essential
  • Understanding of TfL’s services, vision, strategy and objectives and its position within London's context
  • Knowledge of London’s diverse communities and demographics

Experience

  • Experience of working in a public affairs, customer service, public sector or third sector organisation would be desirable but not essential
  • Experience working with diverse communities and audiences, and engaging with them, would be desirable

Equality and Diversity

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability status. We want our team to be reflective of the diverse group of Londoners that we serve: there is a space for you in our team to express your views and make a positive difference. The advertised roles are on a full time, part time or job share basis.

On this recruitment campaign, as part of TfL’s continuing commitment to be an inclusive and equal opportunity employer, we will be removing personal identifiable information from CVs and covering letters to avoid any risk of unconscious bias.

Application Process

Please apply using your CV and a two page covering letter. Think carefully about the skills, knowledge and experience in the advert and cover this in your CV.

The closing date for applications is 30/09/2022 @ 23:59

Benefits

In return for your commitment and expertise, you will enjoy excellent benefits and scope to grow. Rewards vary according to the business area but mostly include:

  • A 75% discount on National Rail Season Ticket and interest free loan
  • 30 days annual leave plus public and bank holidays (delete one)
  • Private healthcare discounted scheme (optional)
  • Tax-efficient cycle-to-work programme
