Analytical and experimental research programs are being conducted in electro-mechanical powertrains for advanced aircraft propulsion systems. The overall goals are to obtain higher power-to-weight, longer life, higher reliability, and more efficient powertrains. The scope includes mechanical or magnetically geared transmissions for systems where shaft power is available from fuel-burning engines, electric motors, and hybrid systems that may have all combinations of fueled engines, motors, and gearboxes. Research topics of particular interest at this time are those that focus on: 1) high power density electro-mechanical powertrains; 2) application of advanced materials and manufacturing; and 3) high reliability and robustness for safety-critical propulsion systems, and 4) improved propulsion system efficiency. Research equipment is available to support experimental studies. There are facilities for experiments with full-scale helicopter transmissions and electric motor evaluations as well as several test rigs for fundamental studies which pertain to lubrication, endurance and fatigue, efficiency, windage, loss-of-lubrication. This research opportunity is relevant to aerospace propulsion and is of mutual interest to NASA, FAA, DoD, and the US vertical lift vehicle industry. The Army Research Laboratory, has a field element co-located at Glenn to support jointly conducted research.
