Electrical Equipment Engineer, Senior

Company Overview

Driven by our vision of the affordable, reliable, net-zero carbon grid of the future, Mainspring has developed a new category of power generation — the linear generator — that delivers onsite, fuel- flexible power to help accelerate the transition to the future grid.

The unique combination of attributes offered by Mainspring’s linear generator enables applications on both the customer and utility sides of the meter for the $816B global electricity equipment market. We serve a wide range of Fortune 500 customers across markets and industries as well as top-tier utilities and other gridside providers.

We are looking to build relationships with people who share our values:

  • Pragmatic Optimism. Building a new category of world-class power generation requires the optimism of ambition and creativity, balanced with practicality to solve problems efficiently. The challenges that arise are opportunities for growth.
  • Excellence without Ego. We bring expertise and commitment to creating the best customer experience, from sales to deployment and service, just as we apply deep technical rigor to building and delivering world-class products. We strive for excellence and behave as leaders with the humility to acknowledge our challenges, both collectively and as individual contributors.
  • Proactive Collaboration. The integration and cross-disciplinary nature of Mainspring’s business requires intentionally seeking out others who bring different skills, perspectives, and priorities. Our culture of inclusion and respect extends beyond our team to interactions with our partners and customers.

Mainspring is based in Menlo Park and is backed by top-tier venture and strategic investors such as
Khosla Ventures, Bill Gates, American Electric Power, and Centrica Innovations. More information can be found at www.mainspringenergy.com.

Responsibilities

Mainspring Energy is looking for an engineer with a broad skill set to design and build the electrical equipment and electrical infrastructure that enables testing of our linear generators.

In this role, you will operate with a high degree of autonomy. You will independently be responsible for designing, procuring, and building temporary and permanent test stations to support R&D and manufacturing testing of our linear generators.

You will excel in this role if you’re a hands-on doer that enjoys building and fabricating as much as designing. You will support a variety of internal customers, including test engineering, NPI (New Product
Introduction) engineering, and hardware design engineering. While you may be assigned a desk, you’ll most often be found in the lab working to bring a test setup to life. In some cases, you will realize the

designs of others. You may direct the work of technicians at times, but most often you will independently be responsible for hardware fabrication and troubleshooting. You’ll be expected to thrive in scenarios where the plan is only partially defined and you’re responsible for figuring out how to take the project to the finish line.

In this role, you will…

  • Design, build, and maintain the electrical equipment infrastructure that enables R&D testing of our linear generators
  • Select components, create bills of material, and work with our supply chain team to procure materials for test purposes
  • Generate equipment documentation, including schematics, mechanical layouts, and maintenance manuals
  • Create preventative maintenance plans for standard electrical equipment within test stations
  • Be a champion of safety and proactively ensure it is always the top priority for you and others
  • Wear many different hats!

Qualifications

You have…

  • Interest and availability in working on-site in Menlo Park, CA
  • Hands-on experience developing and realizing electrical test setups
  • A broad skill set that includes electrical and mechanical aptitude
  • A “collaborate-first” mindset and have successfully communicated across a range of teams and personalities
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a positive safety culture
  • An eagerness to work on a wide variety of projects
  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred, but not required)

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with NFPA 70 / National Electric Code
  • Experience using CAD software to create mechanical models, fabrication drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Experience working at a startup or in a fast-paced product development environment
