For Promotional Appointment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as an Environmental Educator 2; or two years permanent competitive service as an Environmental Educator 1.

For Open Competitive Appointment: 1. Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional/technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education;*
OR
2. Two years of the experience described above AND 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 24 college semester credit hours in biology (for the purpose of these examinations, courses that focus on the study of domesticated or farm animals or humans are not qualifying), earth science, ecology, environmental education, environmental science, field natural history, forestry, geology, marine science, natural resources interpretation, or soil science. You MUST submit a list of qualifying courses with your application, including course title, number of semester credits per course, name of college or university, and the date (or expected date) of completion. You must also have additional experience in environmental education* as follows: three years, one of which must have been in the administration* of an environmental education program.
OR
3. A a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, environmental education, environmental science, forestry, or natural resources interpretation.

Candidates appointed provisionally must take and pass a Civil Service examination for this position and be reachable, i.e., be one of the top three (3) candidates on the resulting eligible list willing to accept the position.

Duties Description
The Environmental Educator 3 located at Connetquot River State Park Preserve will manage the State Parks Environmental Education program and its staff across the Long Island Region. Under the direction of State Parks Chief Environmental Educator and Long Island regional management, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, direct and coordinate the activities of the regional environmental education team through direct control of staffing, programming, and budget;
  • Manage Regional Environmental centers and interpretive programs while coordinating with management at those sites;
  • Develop, review and take actions as required to ensure budgets are within Regional allocations and meet the needs of the work group;
  • Work with Friends groups, partner organizations and other co-working groups;
  • Collaborate with counterpart in Stewardship to provide educational and outreach opportunities;
  • Recruit, hire and supervise staff.
  • Supervise directly or indirectly staff development, training, employee performance, evaluations, and performance plans;
  • Communicate regularly with education staff, park staff and regional management to insure consistent messaging and support of the agency mission, vision philosophy through development of regional environmental materials such as interpretive signs, brochures, social media posts and other outreach materials;
  • Participate on Statewide Environmental Education Committee as Long Island representative and work with educators statewide on future trainings, goals, meetings, and initiatives;
  • Proficient in writing and evaluation lesson plans, design software for brochures and social media posts, Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Teams.

OPERATING NEEDS:
  • Selected candidate must possess and maintain a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License by date of appointment and maintain the license as a term and condition of employment;
  • Ability to work with Excel, Power Point, and MS Word;
  • Ability to speak in front of groups;
  • The appointee may be expected to work weekends and various shifts, holidays and special events as required to provide operational coverage.

The posted hiring rate is the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 23 ($79,325) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,026) The posted job rate is the sum of the statutory job rate ($100,342) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,026)
