ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains standards of patient care under the guidance of the RN. Performs procedures based on established standards, policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of interpersonal relationship skills by effectively communicating with others to achieve desired outcomes. Demonstrates knowledge of available resources to staff, physicians, and patients. Collects unsterile specimens. Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs. Performs phlebotomy procedures under RN direction - draws blood from patient; identifies and labels blood tube in compliance with policy and procedure; returns blood to Laboratory using universal precautions. May initiate IV access if proper IV Therapy education has been completed either through a nursing program (ADN/BSN) or EMT course. An appropriate competency for initiation of IV therapy must be completed and maintained within employee file. Demonstrates ability to prioritize activities dependent upon:

Demonstrates knowledge of importance of maintaining a safe work environment. Documents procedures performed with respect to interventions/actions. Maintains/cleans proper equipment and supplies. Maintains professional relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and other staff. Assist with transfer of patients Performs cleaning and stocking as assigned Helps with Admissions/Discharges. Attends all mandatory in-services. Attends at least 50% of the yearly service line staff meetings. When unable to attend monthly meetings PowerPoint presentations and minutes are available in the Communication Book. Each employee should review and sign roster. Accepts accountability for education provided pertaining to policies, procedures, patient safety, and environment of care issues. Conducts oneself in a professional, compassionate, and competent manner as to reflect the BSSFHS mission. Performs isolation technique. Documents data collected, observations, findings, procedures and interventions in the electronic medical record. Adheres to BSSFHS rules, regulations, and policies. Performs patient assistant duties. Constantly seeks work to improve patient throughput. Assists Unit Secretary as needed. Perform patient hygiene activities Assist RN's to communicate patient information to other hospital staff and physicians. Transport patients to and from Emergency Department when necessary. Access to storage areas with minimal risk medications while performing job duties as assigned. Continuation of initiated oxygen therapy. Transportation of medications from pharmacy to appropriate medication storage area. Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current EMT-Basic, EMT – Enhanced, EMT-Intermediate (without ACLS) Certification, or second year student in an accredited Registered Nursing program
  • Must possess and maintain a current BCLS Certification
  • Proficient in phlebotomy
  • Experience with the use of computers and nursing equipment required
  • 1+ years of healthcare experience strongly preferred

Successful completion of Connect Care Modules ED100 and ED 101 with minimum score of 84%; Completes orientation according to policy/procedures.
