Our District:

The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains. Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar. Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

Purpose Statement:

The position of the EBD Teacher will be to provide services and program support at the secondary level- Middle School, Grades 6-8. The EBD teacher will provide a variety of special education programming models, to include in-class support, and consultation with teachers and staff to recommend appropriate classroom interventions for students with behavior concerns. The EBD teacher will provide crisis intervention for Special Education students and development of individualized flexible programming to support student achievement and success are essential to this position.

Preferred teacher candidates will create a program and classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Teachers will facilitate student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in life, and establish good relationships and rapport with students, parents, and staff members.


The teacher will document student progress, activities, and outcomes; address specific educational needs of students; and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The teacher will maintain professional competence through in-service education, coursework, and professional growth activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide instruction as assigned including assessment, instruction, and evaluation of students.
  • Provide classroom support to include instruction in appropriate Social/Emotional behaviors.
  • Collaborate with staff to design appropriate IEP goals and objectives and identify data collection procedures.
  • Collect data and documentation to write and support authentic IEPs.
  • Assist in the development of behavior intervention appropriate to the needs of students with disabilities and in classroom management techniques.
  • Respond to special assignment as requested by the Special Education administration.
  • Be willing to be trained in Right Response.
  • Successful GLAD or SlOP training desired.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate classroom instructional activities consistent with building and adopted District curriculum.
  • Work with staff specialists in assessing, planning, and implementing instruction.
  • Diagnose and prescribe learning and training programs for individual pupils based on individual needs, interests, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Collaborate and consult with special education staff to help conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments, develop Behavior Intervention Plans, and Emergency Response Plans, if needed.
  • Provide an enthusiastic and positive learning climate that promotes appropriate behavior and successful learning.
  • In collaboration with classroom teachers and staff, work to ensure proper integration of special education students into regular school programs.
  • Maintain effective home-school communication regarding needs and progress of students.
  • Interact positively with students, colleagues, parents, and stakeholders of the school district.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports as required, and communicate with parents as deemed necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Participate in appropriate courses/in-services as deemed necessary for assignment.
  • Promote appreciation for cultural and racial diversity among students.
  • Ability to escort and physically restrain students, if needed.
  • Consult with Special Education Administration, building administration, and teachers in the areas of behavior management, discipline and student motivators/motivation.
  • Attend building Special Education meetings and CARE Team meetings as requested and/or needed.


Working Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; be exposed to childhood diseases; be exposed to, or responsible for, potential health and safety risks


and discomfort incurred by students or self; experience demands from a diversity of others, including students, parents, community and staff; demands of constant change; exertion, including fatigue and concentration; deal with distraught or difficult individuals. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; stand for prolonged periods; lift at least 50 pounds; and be exposed to high noise level. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be required to wear protective gear or clothing.

POSITION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful experience in special education and/or EBD preferred.
  • Successful GLAD or SlOP training desired.
  • Successful experience managing a caseload of Special Education students.
  • Evidence of successful knowledge and experience in working as an instructor with students at appropriate grade level and in subject area.
  • Experience in modifying and adapting curriculum.
  • Knowledge of IEP process and the writing of goals/objectives, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans, vocational assessments and transition plans
  • Demonstrated ability to work and plan successfully with other staff members. Must be a team player.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding related to teaching special needs students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with parents and to clearly articulate school programs.
  • Successful experience with classroom management systems that are appropriate to the developmental levels of high school students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population of abilities in the classroom.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with computer software; or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of performance assessment and evaluation models.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • Valid Washington State Teacher Certificate with endorsement in K-12 Special Education
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Right Response Certification or willingness to become certified
