Research is a pivotal part of the overall success of Henry Ford Health. The Director, Research Administration oversees the core functions of the research administration office and supports the VPs of Research (Basic & Clinical Research) in the implementation and execution of all policies, programs and infrastructure that support compliant and resource-appropriate research. This position will coordinate with key departmental staff, Fund Accounting, Finance, HR, Compliance, and Legal to ensure the completeness, accuracy, and overall integrity of the Basic and Clinical research enterprise.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Prepares and manages the Research Administration cost center budget, including all roll-up core facilities
  • Provide administrative support and mentoring to research core facilities to ensure effective business plan and charge-back structure are in place
  • Prepare quarterly reports to monitor research core spending and identify variances
  • Oversee grant and industry-sponsored research budgets and contracts with a focus on the appropriate utilization of resources to ensure compliance with sponsor guidelines and spending within budgetary constraints
  • Partner with Fund Accounting and Corporate Finance to approve budget adjustments on all grant and contract accounts; develop the NIH indirect cost proposal and Patient Care Discounting proposal; and ensure all awarded grants and contracts are established properly
  • Functions as primary signature authority for all capital purchases, personnel, and travel requisitions that are submitted using grant funds
  • Provide support to research leadership team (Basic and Clinical Research) in the development and implementation of:
    • financial and operational planning of the HFH research enterprise, including budgets and pro forma business plan analysis
    • allocation of endowment funding according to Institutional guidelines
    • internal mentored grant program, proposal development funds, and the physician scientist track program
    • research capital funds and projects
    • research senior bioscientific staff annual productivity process that determines increases and promotions
    • annual research report
    • monthly grant/contract/research reports for research readership, BOG, BOT and completes the quarterly target info for research
    • centralized research clinical trail operations
  • Partners with MSU to ensures all Federal grants submitted by the Institution meet agency guidelines
  • Ensures all government documentation requirements meet appropriate guidelines, ensuring the System is compliant for the receipt of Federal grant awards
  • Ensures submission of all applicable research regulatory reports and documentation allow the System to remain compliant in time and effort reporting, and the ethical conduct of research
  • Ensures clinical trial agreements and associated contracts are reviewed and executed to meet appropriate System guidelines
  • Collaborate with Michigan State University health colleges and the central sponsored program office to create alignments of administrative processes in support of the HFH + MSU Health Science affiliation agreement.
  • Provides direct supervision to Research Administration staff leads (Manager of Compliance; Manager of PreAward) and oversees daily departmental operations
  • Supports effective performance management of all Research Administration staff to foster effective support and collaboration among the HFH research community
  • Leads in the development of research-related job descriptions, classifications, and pay grades in collaboration with HR and Compensation
  • Provides administrative guidance and assistance to all investigators and departments on research endeavors

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:


  • BA/BS in business, health administration or other fields relevant to having acquired a knowledge base in the structure and function of a research enterprise required. (For example, an individual with a science background who transitioned into research administration would have acceptable experience)
  • MBA or equivalent is preferred
  • Strong finance or grant management background required
  • Some relevant experience in research compliance
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in a "central" research office of a university or hospital or with a core or division related to the “central” research office
  • Strong people management skills
