O’Neal Steel has an open position for a Director of Logistics at our Birmingham, AL Corporate Office.

The Director of Logistics will be responsible for the overall strategic operations of O'Neal Steel's transportation network including expense management, safety, compliance, equipment and staff with a goal of cost reduction and maximum efficiency while maintaining excellent customer service.

Responsibilities May Include but Are Not Limited To:

• Evaluates organizational needs to determine optimal logistics strategy including selection and implementation of 3PL partner(s) and other supporting methods of inbound / outbound transportation
• Leverage inbound activity to lower overall cost and maximize equipment utilization
• Drives collaboration throughout commercial, supply chain, and operations management to create highest level of profitability and capacity utilization with a high focus on continuous improvement
• Utilizes data to drive decisions improving profitability and utilization, working with other areas to build and adapt to the challenges each face
• Identifies and implements continuous improvement utilizing technology to differentiate company from the competition and achieve cutting edge effectiveness
• Lower overall transportation cost through effective use of assets, common carriers, and contract negotiation utilization both short-term wins and long-term cost reduction strategies
• Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities
• Maintain awareness of all financial transactions, ensuring that projects are in line with their allotted budgets and establishing rates with carriers and providers
• Supervise team members by delegating tasks accordingly, monitoring performance, and conducting regular follow-ups with business objectives
• Maintains familiarity with legislation, rulings, technologies, and other developments which affect transportation

Required Skills:

• 3+ years managerial experience
• Demonstrated background in and above average knowledge and understanding of operations, supply chain, and transportation data analytics
• Understanding of 3rd party transportation vendors
• Special Skills (above average skill required): collaboration and leadership, data analysis and interpretation, communication (oral and written), interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, fluent with finance, motivation, negotiating, organization, problem solving, supervision, handling outside contacts, judgement and decision making, coping with difficulties and emergencies, promoting safety attitudes and practices.

Desired Skills:

• Efficient in Microsoft Office software.
• Familiarity with Direct Route or similar route optimization software
• Education and Language Skills: possess an associate’s degree in traffic and transportation; possess professional certification with American Society of Transportation and Logistics.
• Special Skills (above average skill desired): financial planning and review, interdepartmental coordination, developing and implementing technical ideas, employee development, personnel practices, promoting community organization relations.
• Additional Skills: possess working knowledge of contract interpretation, equipment specifications
