Responsibilities


GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Director of Finance and Strategic Initiatives is responsible for the Department’s financial planning, forecasting, and analysis functions. They oversee and manage the finance team, annual budget process, monthly financial reporting, and variance analyses while maintaining accounting practices consistent with the University of Rochester’s expectations. They are responsible for analyzing performance, risk assessments, reporting key performance indicators, and a constant awareness of the Department’s financial position. Additionally, they will oversee the Administrator for Prior Authorization and Surgery Scheduling and be responsible for the continued optimization of the workflow processes. The Director will be part of the Orthopaedics leadership/management team and will assist in identifying and prioritizing projects based on the University and Department strategic plans and objectives.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting and Analysis

Assist in developing costing concepts and mechanisms to create and maintain Musculoskeletal Service Line financials. Develop and analyze reports to identify and investigate significant deviations in financial performance. Identifies possible trends and inconsistencies, makes presentations to key stakeholders, and makes recommendations to leadership. Directs and manages financial reporting, cost accounting, and revenue and expense tracking. Develops, maintains, and implements reporting/analytical formats, including;

  • Integrated enterprise-wide financial statements
  • Customizable reports to measure and report on department performance, goals, and objectives
  • Provider dashboard reports
  • Benchmarking analyses
  • Financial analysis of revenue/expense
  • Operational reporting

Reporting and Analytics

  • Develop and track key performance indicators for the Department and report trends to Department Leadership. Utilize Tableau and other enterprise-level reporting tools to develop reporting analytics to support operational decision-making and best practices for the service line. Assist with developing performance improvement programs creating a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Prior Authorization and Surgery Scheduling

  • Oversee the Prior Authorization and Surgery Scheduling workflows. Audit outcomes and recommend workflow modifications in collaboration with the workgroup administrator/managers. Collaborate with faculty, provider, and administrative stakeholders for process review and best practice implementation.

Business Plan Development

  • Perform market and needs analyses for new facilities and programs for regional growth and the capture of incremental market share. Evaluate the healthcare needs of the regional communities and develop business and operational plans to address opportunities. Track Business Improvement plans as submitted and approved by JOC.

Other

  • Coordinates with Chair, CAO, Directors and department heads, and others to ensure effective service level and cooperative relations. Serves on various committees. Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting required
  • Master’s degree (MBA or other similar) preferred
  • 10 years’ experience in financial accounting management or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Experienced team leader with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role. Proven history of ability to lead and influence with direct and indirect authority preferred.
  • Must be able to set priorities and manage competing demands. Should be highly motivated and exhibit innovation, good judgment and reliability in the work place required.
  • University experience utilizing Workday Financial System, AXIOM Budget System, Fundriver, COGNOS, Grants & Endowments. MBA and/or CPA desirable but, not required preferred.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization. Must have a proven record of taking initiative and being proactive. Broad understanding of financial and policy implications within a university setting preferred.
