Job Purpose

The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion provides leadership and strategic direction for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that focus on students and employees. The Director of DEI provides guidance to the president, senior leadership, directors, and managers on all matters regarding DEI and multicultural engagement across the college. The Director of DEI will oversee the Equity and Inclusion Council and ensure DEI strategies align with the college's strategic plan. The Director of DEI will drive cultural awareness, initiatives, implement training, procedures, and policies to ensure Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) continues to build and nurture an organization that encourages and values diverse perspective in the multicultural work and learning environments.

Position Description

  • Consult with a wide variety of stakeholders to develop and integrate DEI goals and strategies into all functions of the College.
  • Consult with and advise the College's senior leadership on complex equity and inclusion issues and priorities.
  • Perform data analysis and benchmark best practices to develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies and programs related to DEI for students and employees.
  • Develop metrics for measuring the effectiveness of DEI initiatives implemented and prepare annual reports to senior leadership on organizational progress.
  • Oversee and ensure the successful design and implementation of the College's DEI strategy and action plan.
  • Assist the Human Resources department to develop and implement recruiting and hiring strategies to attract employees from diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to complete relative scheduled assessments such as climate surveys.
  • Direct and oversee the implementation of programs, projects and learning experiences related to DEI for students and employees.
  • Educate students and employees about DEI issues and how to build an integrated inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Serve as the DEI training subject matter expert (SME) and partner with the Talent Development Manager and Director of Center for Teaching Excellence on unconscious bias, inclusive leadership, curriculum development and other related DEI topics.
  • Serves as a resource, secondary advisor, to advocate for students on DEI related matters.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Department for the development of communications and marketing for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; initiatives to include publications, digital publications, social media, and traditional marketing avenues.
  • Lead various ad-hoc committees and working groups to accomplish DEI goals and objectives as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates understanding of and experience working with culturally, racially, socio-economically, and other diverse populations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills that are exhibited through the ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the design, development and administration of programs, initiatives, and training related to DEI for students and employees.
  • Ability to develop, execute, and communicate DEI principles, practices, models, and provide insightful analysis, performance measures, and metrics.
  • Demonstrates strong project management skills, analytical skills, and ability to make recommendations using data and various inputs.
  • Proven ability to handle extremely sensitive and confidential issues that require independent judgment, strict discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines related to diversity, inclusion, and non-discrimination in higher education, including Title IX, Title IV, Title VII, Clery Act, ADEA, ADA, and Section 504.
  • Proficient use of MS Office Suite such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Position Qualifications and/or Education

Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business management, organizational development, human resources, psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of (3) years' experience working in diversity, equity, and inclusion related work.
  • At least (1) year of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Masters' Degree in business management, organizational development, human resources, psychology, or a related field.
  • Five (5) plus years' experience working in diversity, equity, and inclusion related work.
  • Experience developing and implementing a DEI Strategic Plan.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Multilingual.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and occasionally push or lift items.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week, typical regular hours of Monday – Friday, 8:00 am –5:00 pm. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs in addition to evening and weekend hours.
