Job description

Director of Content [Remote or In-Office]
If “content is king”, that makes the Director of Content the king-maker, doesn’t it? I mean you’re practically royalty. You reign over researching. You’re the sultan of strategy. The viceroy of value. The Rex or Regina of the writing realm. But you’re no boring baron or baroness, because there’s no “business speak” content here. You do it all as the Prince or Princess of Personality. Have we taken the royal thing too far? Absolutely. Are we gonna stop? Not a chance.

So, what makes you so majestic? Glad you asked, Your Highness. You’re curious, creative, strategic, organized, and smart. You’re more than a writer, my liege — you’re a content marketer at heart that also happens to run a team that produces engaging, link-worthy, action-inspiring content. You’re not just intent on driving a content strategy and overseeing the fulfillment of said strategy for an army of admirers. You’re also really, reeeeally good at it.

About

Penicillin changed medicine. The Beatles changed music. And this Insur-tech company is changing insurance (hey, we can’t all be doctors and musicians). What GEICO did for home and auto insurance — well, we’re doing that for the world of business insurance. We make small business insurance simple, affordable, and buyable online without talking to an agent. We’re growing FAST, and we want you to be a part of it.

What We Offer

We offer 160 hours of PTO and two floating holidays. Our “numbers guy” says that’s 4+ weeks which is pretty great. We offer generous salaries, a bonus structure, a great 401k (company match FTW!), 100% free mental health and therapy tools, health/dental/vision plans, and more.

But nothing compares to being part of explosive growth and working with some truly remarkable humans.

A Day in the Life of a Director of Content

Every day is a little different, but one thing is certain: you own our content strategy, content calendars, content engine, and the team that runs it.

Think insurance is boring? Think again. Behind the boring veneer of insurance is the chance to research audiences, create funnels, craft messages, and collaborate with some brilliant minds in product, design, SEO, PPC, biz dev, video, social media and marketing automation.

As the Director of Content, you’ll be tied at the hip with our Director of SEO to ensure our content strategy includes (but isn’t limited to) content that ranks and converts but also educates, entertains, inspires. You’ll also collaborate with other marketing team members to deliver the goods beyond the borders of SEO including content for email, SMS, videos, and more.

This is a key new role on the team. The Director of Content is a principal member of our Brand Management Team that drives the growth of our almost exclusively online insurance products.

You’ll collaborate daily with the heads of Product Marketing, Digital, Design, Email, Partnerships and others on channel-level strategies and needs to produce content that scratches the itch of curious prospects and customers. You’ll hire, manage, train, and coach a team of copywriters/producers and an editor that inspires customers to act, then report on your success.

If you love autonomy, understand the difference between SEO and conversion copywriting, collaborate on creative ideas, chase the high of getting results, celebrate others’ successes, enjoy working with A+ people, and got that proverbial dog in you, this is the place for you.

What You Need to Succeed

You’ll need insane curiosity, excellent analysis, a vivid vision, a collaborative spirit, the heart of a teacher, the skills of a journalist, and drive out the wazoo (whatever that is).

We’re huge on being humble, hungry, smart, and proactive with a willingness to learn and act. For more info on required vs. preferred experience, please see the Skills & Experience section.

Work Schedule & Location

This can be a fully remote job, a blend of partially remote/partially in-office, or fully in-office in Pleasant Grove, Utah. You’ll work that and your hours out with your manager.

Interviews

Interviews will be by phone/virtual. Since this job can be remote, relocation allowance is not currently available.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience running content marketing, copywriting, or production teams in a non-individual contributor role
  • Serious chops in creating and executing multi-channel, full-funnel content strategies and content publishing calendars that increased visitors, revenues, or other KPIs
  • Working knowledge of content-led SEO best practices and guidelines that equal rankings
  • Knowledge of the differences, intricacies, limits, and opportunities of various channels and how content adapts to each channel for maximum impact
  • The belief and ability to write like people talk, tell stories, simplify complex concepts, and make uninteresting topics, well…interesting
  • Skills and experience in conversion copywriting, headline writing, editing, and a journalistic approach to synthesizing info from conversations and interviews with experts into educational, entertaining, and inspiring content found nowhere else
  • A professional background in tech, eCommerce, and/or Saas/software
  • A solid grasp of digital marketing, including SEM (SEO/PPC), email marketing, affiliate marketing, partnership marketing, social media marketing, content marketing, etc.
  • Willingness to learn the world of insurance marketing…but only so you can throw it out the window and market like a human instead
  • Experience creating a “content engine” where content distributes across channels and content reviews and publishing run like a well-oiled machine
  • Experience hiring, managing, coaching, and training a team of skilled content writers/producers
  • A humble, hungry, smart, and proactive attitude
  • Some mad project management skills with familiarity of PM tools
  • The ability to craft a compelling product, value proposition and/or message
  • Strong research and problem-solving abilities, using and analyzing data to see content problems and opportunities

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in running content for an aggressively growing company
  • A background in B2B content marketing with a human flair
  • Skills in persona creation, content translation processes, and web publishing using WordPress or similar platforms
  • Ability to manage and oversee multiple projects at once with familiarity of project management tools (eg Trello, Monday.com, etc.)

Don’t worry if you don’t meet every criteria. If you meet most, you should apply!
