University of Illinois College of Law

The University of Illinois College of Law, one of the oldest and most prestigious law schools in the United States, is seeking a strategy-focused financial executive to join its senior administrative team. This position reports the dean of the College, manages a team of three professionals, and is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Management:
  • Direct business-related operations for the unit, including grants and contracts, purchasing and TEM, including the development of unit-level programs and policies, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, university policy, relevant state and federal laws, and the goals of the College of Law.
  • Set and implement operational policies and procedures for handling daily finance- and budget-related administrative matters.
  • Manage the (new) Provost College level budget program operations and reporting.
  • Represent the Law College on the Provost’s College Budget Officer’s Counsel and other Campus level organizations and committees.
  • Manage the College’s multi-year budgetary planning model.
  • Act as Unit Head for reviewing and approving all purchases for the College of Law and the Law Library.
  • Work closely with Law Human Resources, Development, Alumni Relations, and Admissions to provide financial and budgetary guidance.
  • Supervise exempt and non-exempt civil service staff, including selection, promotion, training, discipline, coaching and performance evaluation.
Administrative Leadership:
  • Develop Law's critical relationship with IUB for textbooks and supplies.
  • Maintain Law's ongoing relationship with Illini Union food service in regard to the Law Building's cafe to ensure student and employee satisfaction along with proper utilization of Law facilities.
  • Oversee Law's in-house copy center to ensure cost efficient purchasing and allocation of supplies and staff time as well as uptime, efficiency and long-term reliability of equipment.
  • Initiate and lead the College's electronic recordkeeping program to improve security and accessibility while reducing costs and increasing efficiency.

Approvals:
  • Review and approve financial transactions for compliance with university policy and appropriate use of funds.
  • Perform general financial oversight and planning for the Law College and Law Library.
  • Oversee and approve procurement processes, including purchase orders and University credit card purchases.
  • Work with various offices, including the Office of Business and Financial Services, Campus Budget Office, Purchasing, Payables, etc., to gather information and process various business transactions.
  • Initiate and complete transactions while monitoring business activity to anticipate and resolve problems.

Reporting and Compliance:
  • Advise the Dean regarding overall budgeting and finance systems.
  • Responsible for compiling and preparing the American Bar Association and US News annual fiscal compliance reporting.
  • Work closely with the Dean and the Provost office, to compile and prepare ad hoc management reports as needed.
  • Coordinate with college-level Human Resources and Information Technology departments to develop reports and policy recommendations for the director.
  • Act as liaison to campus and university departments and participate on committees, including those regarding Financial Services, Internal Audits, and Sponsored Programs Administration.
  • Assist the Dean in developing an annual budget as well as develop long-term financial forecasts.
  • Prepare various critical reports, including those for the American Bar Association and US News annual reporting and audit purposes, and perform ad hoc analyses of financial data.
  • Participate in the development of responses to audit findings.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, or a related field
5+ years of relevant financial or accounting experience
2+years of managerial or supervisor experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
MBA, JD or similar advanced degree
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Expertise in UIUC financial and reporting systems
Working knowledge of UIUC purchasing policies and practices
Proficiency creating and utilizing reports using Business Objects
