Job Description: Data Analyst:
The VA Providence Healthcare System is a unique research site in the heart of academic-rich southern New England. The fundamental mission of research at the Ocean State Research Institute (OSRI) is to advance the healthcare of Veterans.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a full-time data analyst to assist Providence VA Medical Center investigators conduct research studies using large data sets from various sources, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW), the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) claims files, Million Veteran Program, and various other datasets.
The incumbent will be responsible for the overall operational management of activities associated with data extraction and the creation of project-specific databases for analyses, including:
- Using SQL to create datasets from large amounts of raw data.
- Merging large datasets together.
- Applying operational definitions in SAS.
- Checking for errors and inconsistencies in the data and ensuring corrections are made.
- Performing statistical programming and analysis in SAS.
- Assisting in the interpretation of analyses.
- Producing written reports, tables, and figures for data presentation.
- Assisting investigators with regulatory paperwork and requirements, including data access requests.
- Management and organization of project-related files.
- Adhering to data security requirements.
- Maintaining a professional demeanor in performance of duties and meeting deadlines.
- Communicating verbally and in writing with investigators, research associates, other staff.
Qualifications:
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, public health, health informatics, or a related field is required. A Master’s Degree in any of these disciplines is preferred. Additional required skills/training: experience with database design, cleaning, and management with a variety of large databases; SQL, SAS, and MS Excel programming, and report generation at an intermediate to expert level; proficiency in the use of all other Microsoft Office applications. Additional highly preferred skills/training: recent or current experience cleaning and managing VA data. Additional preferred skills/training: statistical knowledge at an intermediate to expert level.
