Job Description
Under general direction of a lead worker or supervision by departmental administrator or Building Services Manager, performs duties to provide care, cleaning & maintenance of building, furniture & fixtures.

  • Adheres to all OSHA, CDC and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes and renews floor surfaces
  • Cleans and shampoos rugs and carpets
  • Washes walls; cleans, dusts and waxes furniture and fixtures following either Level 1 or Level 2 clean/sanitize/disinfect guidelines as directed***
  • Cleans glass and mirrors
  • Cleans and empties trash receptacles
  • May remove and hang drapes
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways and entrance areas
  • Reports need for equipment repair
  • Reports evidence of fire, illegal entry and theft of property
  • Checks in supplies; stocks supply areas
  • May assist in washing and sanitizing dishes, glassware, utensils, pots & pans
  • Cleans and sanitizes bathroom fixtures & drinking fountains.
  • Operates dish machine/pot washer to clean and sanitize dishes, glasses, pans, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in sanitation and safety areas of dining , residential, academic and administrative units
  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form
  • Ability to work independently or with others
  • Demonstrate willingness to work with diverse populations
  • Ability to read and write common vocabulary in sentence structure
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems
  • Ability to demonstrate dexterity and skill in use of craft-associated hand and/or power tools and equipment
  • Ability to mix cleaning compounds and follow safety procedures
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to effectively use a 15 foot ladder
  • May require valid driver’s license
  • Completion of a test may be required
  • May climb ladders
  • May be exposed to extreme temperatures
  • May be exposed to dirt, grease, odors, cramped conditions, extreme hot or cold temperatures, heights, and electrical hazards
  • May be exposed to dangerous machinery
  • During Level 2 working conditions will be required to wear designated PPE up to and including full body suit, appropriate mask, etc***
  • Must meet Occupational Health Medical Standards for posted position/classification.
  • An established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of custodial safety practices**,
  • Skill in operation of cleaning equipment** (electric scrubbers, buffers & vacuum cleaners)
  • Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures**.
