Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Objective:

Individual is certified and trained in two or more radiological specialties. This position is utilized during evening, night and weekend shifts. These Imaging Services personnel are responsible for the provision of quality diagnostic, fluoroscopic, interventional, CT, NM and/or US procedures through direct patient contact .

Patient Population Served :

The Multi Modality Technologist is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, education, and safety needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in Radiology.

Essential Position Functions :

1. The Multi Modality Technologist provides patient diagnostic services in the form of medical imaging procedures/exams for all ages throughout the age and developmental span and may assist the physician in fluoroscopic procedures.

2. The Multi Modality Technologist operates equipment or administers radiopharmaceuticals producing Ionizing Radiation, a known health hazard. S/he must maintain practices consistent with ALARA minimizing the dose of radiation by both the patient and personnel. S/he is thoroughly informed in the field of Radiological Health, and the physical foundations of Radiology. S/he employs this knowledge in the utilization of techniques and protective measures consistent with the safety of patients, personnel, and the general public.

3. The Multi Modality Technologist may perform diagnostic, operative, bedside, trauma, fluoroscopic radiographic, nuclear medicine and/or ultrasound procedures. S/he is knowledgeable in sterile technique, O.R. protocol, patient care techniques, and emergent life safety procedures. The Multi Modality Technologist also has fundamental knowledge of the uses and risks associated with pharmaceuticals (Contrast media, non-ionic) commonly employed in Radiology and may also have fundamental knowledge of the uses associated with radiopharmaceuticals in Nuclear Medicine.

4. The Multi Modality Technologist evaluates the extent and urgency of equipment malfunction incidents, and contacts the Biomedical service and/or Director. S/he is thoroughly informed on the basic operation of all diagnostic equipment in the department and is able to recognize problems and changes in performance promptly. In situations were outside service is called in, the Multi Modality Technologist monitors progress of service, reporting concerns or discrepancies to the Director.

5. The Multi Modality Technologist helps to maintain an inventory of supplies, noting rate of consumption, utilization, and assuring that adequate supplies and materials are available.

6. The Multi Modality Technologist exercises judgment in modifying and adapting procedures according to the needs of the patient. S/he has an extensive in-depth knowledge of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.

7. The Multi Modality Technologist is competent to respond appropriately in a crisis situation. S/he is capable of handling any responsibility within the scope of his/her position on short notice.

8. The Multi Modality Technologist regularly assumes on-call duties as assigned to assure coverage of X-Ray, NM, and/or US services. S/he guarantees appropriate availability and is prepared to respond to the Department as needed. The Multi Modality Technologist is cognizant of the risks associated with emergency and trauma patient care, and performs accordingly.

9. The Multi Modality Technologist has a complete working knowledge of associated functions within the Imaging Services Department and is capable of staffing the clerical areas if needed.

10. The Multi Modality Technologist is cognizant to the environment in which s/he works, generating an appropriate and courteous attitude and maintains patient medical record confidentiality at all times

11. The Multi Modality Technologist dresses in the manner described in and adheres to policy set forth by the Department and the Hospital.

12. S/he attends designated Imaging Services Department Staff meetings and in-service sessions.

13. As part of the overall Performance Improvement Program, the Multi Modality Technologist participates in reviews and suggests initiatives for review and Department improvement.

14. The Multi Modality Technologist is expected to participate in the professional education and development of Imaging Services students. A professional atmosphere for a positive educational interaction, displaying proper professional ethics, positive attitude and professional competency in the presentation of radiographic skill is expected.

15. The Multi Modality Technologist is aware and practices Customer service skills in accordance with hospital standards.

16. The Multi Modality Technologist has a working knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and an excellent understanding of X-ray, CT, NM and/or US. Certification by the ARRT, ARDMS or NMTCB is required (within 1 year of date of hire). (The staff member will need to be ARRT registered in CT with 24 months of completing any in department training in accordance with departmental policy regarding this.)

17. The Multi Modality Technologist must demonstrate a positive team oriented attitude and have excellent intra-personal and customer service skills.

18. The Multi Modality Technologist performs calibration tests, basic preventative maintenance, and may operate the X-ray, CT, NM and/or US equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

What qualifications you will need:

successful completion of an approved curriculum in Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine, or Ultrasound culminating in the awarding of a diploma, A.S. or B.S. degree. Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R)(CT)(N) in the fields of Radiography, CT and/or NM or Registry eligible. Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and/or by the American Registry For Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Registry eligible (All required to become Registered within 1 year of date of hire). BCLS Certified.


  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist
  • Registered Radiographer (ARRT)
  • Associate Degree
