About KIPP Baltimore:

KIPP Baltimore is a non-profit organization that operates two public charter schools in Baltimore City - KIPP Ujima Village Academy and KIPP Harmony Academy. KIPP Forward is KIPP Baltimore’s high school placement and alumni support program, which guides students to gain admission to and successfully complete their post-secondary pathways of choice. There are currently over 1,500 KIPP Baltimore students and alumni who receive support from the KIPP Forward program.

The Countdown to College Summer Program runs from July 10th through August 11th with a group of rising high school seniors. Participants engage in a five-week program that gives them a head start in the post-secondary application process and the opportunity to complete a one credit college class taught by a college professor all while gaining career readiness skills and being paid by YouthWorks.

Job Description

Position Overview:

As a member of the KIPP Forward team, the CTC Summer Program Instructor will be responsible for preparing for and delivering all KIPP Forward content lessons. Additionally, they are responsible for providing feedback to students and general support to the participants, Teaching Assistants, and KIPP Forward staff to ensure a smooth implementation of the program.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in two full day training sessions on Wednesday, June 28th and Thursday, June 29th from 10am-3pm.
    • Complete approximately 2 hours worth of pre-work prior to June 22
    • Plan class expectations and co-teaching dynamic with Teaching Assistants (two TAs assigned to each Instructor)
  • Commit to being present for the entirety of the Countdown to College program – which runs from July 10th through August 11th from 9:00am-2:00pm daily, with the exception of Mondays, which run from 9am-3:00pm (there is a staff meeting from 2-3pm).
  • Prepare for and execute KIPP Forward lesson plans.
    • Thoroughly review and internalize all provided lessons materials prior to the day of instruction.
    • Make any necessary adjustments to lesson plans and instructional materials prior to the day of instruction.
    • Implement KIPP Forward lesson plans to build student understanding and preparedness for the post-secondary planning and application process.
    • Meet weekly with assigned Teaching Assistants to review class and small group observations, assignment progress, etc.
    • Evaluate assigned Teaching Assistants on their performance as young leaders.
    • Provide any necessary support to participants, Teaching Assistants or KIPP Forward staff to ensure the smooth implementation of the program.
    • Chaperone any scheduled college and career visit days.
    • Maintain Google Classroom page, including class announcements, updates, and assignment feedback.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to program participants.
  • Monitor independent work-time and provide assistance and guidance to students as needed.
  • Ensure all Countdown to College participants successfully complete all necessary deliverables required by the program, including but not limited to:
    • A final draft of a college essay
    • Creation of the FSA ID
    • A final draft of a resume
    • A balanced and individualized wish list of post-secondary programs
  • Work with the KIPP Forward team and perform the following general responsibilities
  • Support an inclusive culture in which every child’s interests, passions, and post-secondary pathway aspirations are valued.
  • Communicate with KIPP Staff regularly and transparently.
  • Attend weekly CTC Curriculum meetings.
  • Develop positive, appropriate relationships with program participants, KIPP Forward staff, and Teaching Assistants.
  • Consistently implement the classroom management policies adherent to YouthWorks and KIPP Forward policy.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Teaching certification
  • At least one year middle and/or high school teaching experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build relationships with students and families
  • Knowledge of the Baltimore City educational landscape (preferred)
  • Ability to research and effectively communicate information in various forms
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Excellent organization skills including a comprehensive organizational system
  • Proficient in MS Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as the Google Docs platform

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits: $30.00/hour
