Job description

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. The Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to court reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting-edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them—in the courts, in Congress and the states, and in the court of public opinion.

Position

The Brennan Center seeks an attorney to join the Center’s Judiciary Program, which works to realize a fair and inclusive judicial system that protects fundamental rights and democratic values and advances the rule of law. The attorney will work as part of a team to advance innovative court reforms at the federal and state levels, bolster the protection of rights under state constitutions, promote diversity on the bench, and expose systemic inequities in the legal system.

Working with senior program staff, the attorney will engage in legal and policy research and writing, draft amicus briefs, write blog posts and other popular writing, and work with coalition partners. The Judiciary Program is part of the Brennan Center’s Democracy unit, and over the course of their tenure, the attorney’s work may evolve to address other emergent issues relating to the rule of law and discrimination and racial inequality in our democratic institutions.

Note: Staff are currently working in the office 3 days a week. This position is based at our headquarters in New York City and may require occasional travel.

Responsibilities may include:
