This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement.

This CO I position works as a Canine Handler and is assigned to the Security Accountability Section. This position will be assigned to the Sandy Ridge Bus Terminal, High Point NC. While this position is assigned to the Sandy Ridge Bus Terminal, duties may be utilized anywhere in the state.

Responds to emergency situations, searches for escape offenders

  • Position will be responsible for the training and utilization of all canines
  • The handler will be responsible for the wellbeing of canines assigned to him/her to include the cleanliness of the canines and the kennels.
  • The canine handler is responsible for the daily care and feeding of the canines, ensuring appropriate medical care, and maintaining a record of the canine’s medical history.
  • Handler will be responsible for the proper cane and maintenance of an assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • The handler must participate in annual in-service training and any specialized training required for handler/canine certification
  • This position may be required to coordinate and work with special teams and their missions

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8a - 5p

Note to Current State Employees: The Salary Grade for this position is CR05. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase/decrease MAY result.

About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC):
The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document in the Description of Work section of their application that they possess ALL of the following were applicable:

Expertise working with the overall operation of correctional facilities;

  • Proven experience using various policies, procedures, rules and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
  • Expertise working with emergency preparedness and knowledge of special teams.
  • Documented skills in the use and care of firearms.

Management Preferences:
Previous K9 handling experience is preferred but not required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
-OR-
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $34,621.00 - $45,049.00 per year
