General Information
University Recreation (UREC) is accepting applications for a Coordinator of Operations. The mission of UREC is to promote and advance healthy lifestyles through educational programs, participation opportunities and supportive services. UREC’s qualified staff is committed to excellence and responsive to the developmental needs of their participants. UREC looks for people who are passionate about teaching and working with students. UREC’s award-winning main facility is 278,515 square feet of recently expanded and renovated space.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • OPERATIONS: Provide leadership and supervision of the day-to-day operations of activities and events in UREC’s three multi-activity centers, two sports forums, six racquetball/squash courts, indoor track, University Park, and satellite facilities. Manage the risk in spaces through the enforcement of policies and procedures and timely reporting. Provide for daily inspection and regular floor sweeping of assigned spaces prior to use. Maintain functions, safety and appearance of these spaces using the internal maintenance request process. Records and reports on facility usage statistics.
  • STUDENT LEADERSHIP: Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate a diverse staff of 50-60 students in the Recreation Manager and Assistant positions. Lead area staff meetings and responsible for scheduling. Assist the Assistant Director for Operations in the mentorship of a graduate assistant.
  • EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT: Manage the spectator, storage and equipment areas in each of the activity spaces; inventory, maintain and replace equipment as necessary. Responsible for all audio/visual equipment in the building including sound systems, microphones, speakers, and recreation equipment control systems.
  • EVENT SUPPORT: Provide operations support for all programs and events at UREC, University Park, and Satellite Facilities. Collaborate with Reservations and Events staff on set-ups and staffing. Maintain inventory of all risers, stages, tables, chairs, podiums, and supplies. Provide feedback to Reservations and Events staff following each event and suggestions for continuous improvement.
  • ADMINISTRATION: Serve as an active member of the Professional Staff Evening Facility and Program Supervision Team. Serve on departmental/divisional committees and work teams as requested, and actively participate in staff meetings and retreats. Work with the Assistant Director to prepare budget proposals and equipment requests. Maintains personnel files and manages student employee payroll within budget parameters.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree related field
  • One or more years of related full-time experience. A graduate assistantship is considered ½ year of experience per year
  • Experience in staff hiring, training and supervision


Preferred:
  • Master’s Degree in related field
  • Campus recreation operations experience
  • Experience supervising students in a recreation setting
  • Experience supervising and managing informal and large-scale recreational events
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly organized, efficient, and show attention to detail
  • Experience managing audio/visual equipment
  • Experience with Event Management System, Connect2Concepts, and When2Work software systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a diverse team

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
