This announcement will fill vacancies for various facilities within MWR on Fort Wainwright, Alaska. These facilities include Birch Hill Ski & Snowboard Area, Chena Bend Golf Course, Nugget Lanes Bowling Center, and Warrior Zone.

Up to 25% recruitment and retention incentive may be authorized for positions offering at least a guarantee of 10 hours per week.

Duties
  • Takes inventory to determine ordering requirements.
  • Follows health and safety precautions to ensure safe preparation and storage of food items. Monitors and maintains the appropriate temperature of all food items throughout preparation and service.
  • Sets up and serves food as necessary. Check food for appropriate preparation, temperature, and packaging.
  • Operates kitchen equipment designed to mix and cook food items. Uses cleans and maintains power kitchen equipment.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Direct Deposit and Social Security Card are required.
  • Meet the qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 4 hours of initial food sanitation and safety training is required within 30 days of employment and a minimum of 4 hours of refresher training annually.
  • Subject to the satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks by AR 215-3, Chapter 2 to include a medical examination.
  • Incumbents may be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.
  • Work involves continual standing and walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift or move objects up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers or lifting devices.
  • Work is performed in kitchen areas, which are well-lighted but are often hot and noisy.
  • The employee is exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigerators or freezing units.
  • Must stand on the tile floor.
  • Subject to burns, cuts, and slipping on wet floors.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to the duties described above, which included skill in working with professional kitchen appliances and equipment.
  • Be able to communicate (verbal and written) in English.
  • Basic knowledge of food preparation principles and practical understanding of the physical processes that occur in cooking.
  • Knowledge of proper cooking temperatures and preparation methods for a variety of foods.
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate the preparation of several different foods to ensure that they are ready for service at the appropriate mealtime.
  • Knowledge of food-borne illnesses, food safety, and proper storage methods for hot and cold food items to prevent loss or illness due to spoilage.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, particularly standard recipes, and detailed cooking instructions.
  • Skill in operating and cleaning a wide variety of food service equipment, including special equipment for the preparation of large-volume items.
  • Skill in carving, preparing garnishes, and assembling attractive platters, salads, and other food presentations.
