Job description
Control, Robotics and Automation Engineer (CRA Engineer) is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes. This position will be responsible for automation and controls systems design, specification, programming, simulation and testing, and start up assistance. Act as a liaison between Engineering, Production and other departments in order to increase interdepartmental efficiency and cooperation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design of Electrical Controls for new equipment for US Plants in unison with Engineering, Maintenance and Machine shop - including: design of schematics, layout of panels, selection and ordering of associated components, writing PLC programs and robot programs, design and programming of vision systems, documentation of controls - schematics and programs, and overseeing electrical build and installation.
  • Review production processes and conceptualize and design robotics and automation systems with vision systems to eliminate labor content increase, flexibility, improve error proofing, and reduce floor space requirements for product manufacturing.
  • Conduct research and development activities concerned with integration and testing of electronic and mechanical components, products and systems and development of applications for industrial use.
  • Work with the Automation Manager in overseeing control related issues relevant to process equipment being built by outside contractors.
  • Work with the Automation Manager in the evaluation of pre-manufactured equipment being considered for purchase ensuring adherence to Hutchinson design specifications and requirements with primary focus on: machine controls, efficiency, reliability, maintenance requirements and preventive maintenance, personnel and machine safety, and conformance to Requirements from Vendors document.
  • Coordinate activities concerning technical developments, scheduling, and resolution of engineering design and test problems.
  • Assist with evaluation and improvement of existing or future equipment in HSSI Plants where machine control modifications are necessary to improve overall efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Assist Maintenance with analysis and repair of more difficult or problematic equipment failures including being available in crisis situations.
  • Provide training in regard to machine operation and maintenance requirements for all new equipment.
  • Responsible for completing all tasks assigned by the Automation Manager which includes using tools to wire and repair new and existing equipment.
  • Evaluate existing systems and equipment, and recommend design modifications to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements.
  • Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.
  • Analyze, indicate and calculate test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives and modify or adjust equipment to meet specifications.
  • Provide project management within cost and time constrained environments; troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Ensure compliance with the health and safety regulations and quality standards.
  • Up to 20% travel to other plants.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • To perform this job successfully, the ideal candidate will have a proven track record in engineering as well as the ability to develop and implement standard engineering practices, and provide detailed documentation upon project completion.

  • Must have proven experience in PLC logic and programming with any of the following PLCs: Allen Bradley, Siemens, Omron and HMI or SCADA programming. Experience specifically with Allen-Bradley RSLogix5000 and Studio 5000 is desired, but not required.
  • Must have proven experience with designing HMIs. Experience specifically with FactoryTalk View Studio is desired, but not required.
  • Must have proven experience with robot programming. Experience specifically with Fanuc if desired, but not required.
  • Must have proven experience with making electrical drawings in CAD. Experience specifically with AutoCAD Electrical is desired, but not required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • BS Engineering Robotics and Automation Controls or BSEE or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years experience in a similar position. Experience in automotive rubber parts manufacturing is a plus.
  • Experience to meet responsibilities with minimal detailed supervision. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of electrical component selection and panel layout design including materials, safety, and labeling practices.
  • Must understand and be able to influence the design of mechanicals, pneumatics, hydraulics, and data acquisition.
  • Possess specific control disciplines such as advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), supervisory control, data acquisition (SCADA), robotics, automation systems and vision systems.
  • Must be a self-starter, organized, dedicated, with good record keeping skills.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills. Must have the ability to accept and cope with restrictive time frames and unpredictable situations.
