Salary Range: $28.13 - $37.98 hourly

Job Summary:

The Construction Inspector provides inspection services of Development and Capital Improvement projects with emphasis on asphalt, concrete, and utility construction that occurs in the Public Rights of ways. This includes storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, street paving, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, driveways, and other engineering construction projects.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Specialized training beyond high school normally gained in a program of less than 18 months duration.

Or

  • 9 accredited hours, including hours in an engineering discipline or related field; or an equivalent combination or training and experience.
  • Valid and current driver’s license.
  • Experience in the construction industry in the any of the following areas, concrete, asphalt, and water/wastewater.
  • The following certs to be obtained with 1-2 years of hire: American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Testing Technician Grade 1; Concrete Pavement Inspector –Level 1; Asphalt Paving Materials (APM) Inspector Certification; and Class 1 Distribution Operator and certified Water Professional.
  • General knowledge of Civil Engineering procedures, practices or operations required.
  • Able to follow detailed instructions.
  • May require typing or bookkeeping skills, operation of several single purpose power tools/machines or equipment involving specialized training.
  • Entry level knowledge of complex software.
  • Must prepare routine reports or correspondence.
  • Typically, on-the-job training of processes and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs inspections during and upon completion of construction for line, grade, slope, placement, foundation or base, quality of workmanship and material, safety precautions to ensure compliance to city, state, and federal standards and specifications an plans.
  • Qualified to verity field tests including hydrostatic pressure tests, low air pressure tests, vacuum tests, concrete slump, air entrainment and strengths tests.
  • Communicate diplomatically and effectively with state and federal agencies, coworkers, private industry representatives, technical consultants, and the general public.
  • Investigates complaints regarding all construction activities and handle difficult situations with patience and good judgment under stressful conditions.
  • Completes and maintains various documents, records, reports and paperwork.
  • Provides information for record (as-built) drawings.
  • Ensures conformance with current Americans with Disabilities Act with regard to the Public Right of Way.
  • Scheduling of project activities on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis depending on the complexity of the project.
  • Discussion concerning plan interpretation and plan objective.
  • Discuss any deficiencies on construction products.
  • Discuss issues encountered during construction that need Project Manager’s approval.
  • Input on intent of plans.
  • Keep Project Managers informed on progress and conflicts.
  • Ensure compliance with standards as identified in the specifications.
  • Address general questions concerning on-going construction projects, to include traffic issues, project timelines, etc.
  • Seek solutions and information regarding issues with materials and testing of said materials.
  • See answers brought up by contractors during constructions or to get a better understanding of plan intent.
  • Problem solving and decision-making.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks.
  • Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
  • Dangerous to considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
  • Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
