General Summary:
The Drain Improvement Construction Inspector performs field inspection work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, codes and recognized standards and methods of work in Ingham County, Michigan.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identifies and problem solves site construction issues.
  • Monitors construction progress for compliance with codes, permit conditions and contract documents.
  • Attends various meetings as needed related to construction projects.
  • Answers inquiries and complaints from residents or community members.
  • Obtains measurements and report progress information and place on an Inspector's Daily Report (IDR).
  • Completes and files daily reports.
  • Coordinates construction materials testing with company staff or self performs on-site testing when needed.
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with the plans and specifications for the job to be inspected.
  • Verifies proper materials are being used prior to installation.
  • Communicates potential problems to the contractor and project engineer prior to delays occurring and keeps project engineer and supervisor informed of progress of project.
  • Follows and carries out specific instructions on an independent basis.
  • Computes quantities and costs when requested.
  • Communicates professionally with contractors, county or municipal inspectors and staff.
  • Reviews pay applications and confirms quantities and/or the percentage of completion values being requested are accurate.
  • Implements company mandated safety policies.
  • Responsible for job specific quality system tasks as defined in quality manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. For example, utility research, as-built plans, quantity take offs, assisting with field survey or construction staking, etc.

Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications:
  • High school diploma required.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Certifications in State of Michigan EGLE Storm Water Operator (CSWO) and Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) Plan Review and Design are required.
  • Certifications in American Concrete Institute (ACI), ICC or MCA are preferred but not required.

Knowledge and Experience:
  • 5 years-experience in the construction industry as an inspector on site construction project and experience working on public sector projects.
  • Experience working on municipal or governmental construction projects.
  • Knowledge of how to scale and measure distances.
  • Knowledge of surveying procedures and principles.
  • Knowledge of standard specifications for infrastructure, in particular drainage improvements, grading and sewer, construction in Michigan and their application.

Competencies and Personal Attributes:
  • Ability to operate a level and an understanding of cut and fills and elevations for grades.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effective verbally.
  • Ability to interact with contractors, inspectors, and staff in a professional manner.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations such as percentages, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplications, and divisions accurately.
  • Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Availability This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, overtime and weekends as required.

Travel As a part of performing this position’s duties, travel will be required to respective job sites in the Mid-Michigan Area and throughout the United States.
