JOB TITLE: Community Recreation Specialist

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible to plan, coordinate and direct various programs for the waiver respite and corresponding contract programs in Lewis County. Will work directly with groups of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a recreation setting within the community and agency. Responsible for the learning experiences and supervision for people with intellectual developmental disabilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below, and essential functions may change from time to time.

  • Ensure protection from abuse, neglect, mistreatment and exploitation in regard to the health, safety, comfort, and well-being for the people we support by adhering to all related policies.
  • Support the people being served with living a life that includes self-determination, choices, and promotes attainment of personal outcomes.
  • Responsible for the implementation of assigned duties and activities provided by the Community Respite Programs Manager.
  • Research available community activities, schedule activities and provide the people we support and their families with monthly calendar of activities, as well as provide direct supervision during respite programming.
  • Attend annual Life Plan meeting of each participant as needed (not mandatory but good practice).
  • Act as the initial contact person for individuals/families interested in participating in Adult Respite programs. Meet with individuals and their families to review the respite programs and obtain signed releases, necessary Medicaid documentation and complete all agency enrollment requirements including DDPS.
  • Provide documentation to the Community Respite Program Managers for quarterly reports (for continued family support oversight).
  • Participate in activities of daily living as necessary, i.e., toileting, eating, dressing, bathing, and ambulating to whatever extent is required based on individual needs, including lifting assistance as needed.
  • Review Life Plans in conjunction with or in the absence of the Community Respite Programs Manager and communicate with the Care Manager regarding changes required.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Associates’ degree from an accredited college or university and 1 year of experience in working with individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities OR High School diploma / GED and 3 years of experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required trainings/certifications including First Aid/CPR and others as assigned.
  • Valid NYS drivers’ license and approved copy of a drivers’ abstract from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must be computer literate and experienced working with Microsoft Word, Office, Excel, Access and a large database.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 per hour
