DESCRIPTION:

Responsibilities include providing nutrition education and physical activity promotion targeting youth and families eligible for supplemental nutrition assistance in school and community settings, guiding GWP program in the area of nutrition and nutrition standards, based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, as well as participating in GWP team meetings. Ability to provide nutrition education in schools, students, and community organizations through speaking engagements, nutrition education presentations and other activities. Facilitate a nutrition education program that teaches families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices and teach low-income individuals how to select and prepare healthy low-cost food in a multi-session class series, using the lesson plans and recipes for each class provided in an established curricula. Additional responsibilities include assisting in project activities focusing on school-based and community-based health with particular emphasis on programming addressing reduction of health and healthcare disparities and assisting with presentations.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will be adept at multi-tasking.
  • Provides close communication with supervisors.
  • Possesses the ability to interact with both internal and external customers at all levels and other HFHS departments.
  • Conducts nutrition education and teaching demonstrations.
  • Compiles data for fact sheets and reporting and uses evaluation tools.
  • Works with cultural competency/health disparities interventions to improve care for underrepresented racial and ethnic populations.
  • Possesses strong computer skills, strong organizational skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or Dietetics or a closely related field.
  • All candidates must hold degrees in a field that is applicable to the delivery of food, nutrition and food safety educational programming to individuals and families, such as foods and nutrition, health, dietetics, home economics, or other areas applicable to food, nutrition and food safety related fields.
  • Professional nutrition experience or training.
  • Interest in working with low-income individuals with diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfort speaking in front of an audience.
  • Ability to travel to class locations.
  • Willingness to be trained in the Cooking Matters curricula.
  • Willingness to work as a team and adhere to program policies and procedures.
  • Experience compiling nutrition education curricula and materials, coordinating taste testings and cooking demonstrations, working with low-income, underserved populations (both youth and adults), teachers and students, and collaborating with partners is preferred.
