Service Description : Green Star of Interior Alaska (GSIA) is a local nonprofit serving the Fairbanks North Star Borough and several rural villages in the greater Interior of Alaska. Our programs encourage reuse of materials, reduction of unnecessary waste, and increasing recycling efforts in our community. We envision a vibrant culture of recycling and the physical infrastructure to support it in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. We are a small nonprofit organization with ten part-time and five full-time staff members operating two warehouses for the purposes of reuse and recycling. The GSIA warehouse handles electronics reuse and recycling through several contracts with bulk buyers and programs that encourage reuse such as our laptop program that encourages low-income community members to request a free refurbished laptop. Our most recent contract has allowed us to expand to handling many other recyclables in the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s Central Recycling facility. This warehouse handles cardboard, plastics #1 and #2, aluminum and mixed paper for recycling. We employee community members that are returning to work through the Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training (MASST) program as well as from the local Fairbanks Rescue Mission. GSIA serves rural Alaskan villages through the summer Backhaul program. Through our partnership with Tanana Chiefs Conference and several other commercial and nonprofit organizations, we receive electronics from surrounding villages for recycling. Used electronics are diverted from rural landfills when they are shipped first by barge and then by truck to our GSIA warehouse for processing. Green Star of Interior Alaska seeks to increase the amount of community support it receives in donations and in volunteer hours by investing time and energy in development of funding and volunteer programs that are meaningful and effective into the future.
