  • Monday thru Friday (2:00 PM -10:00 pm)

General Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment which fosters growth and rehabilitation and facilitates the development of mutual aid/self help skills among individuals. Staff’s primary role is to provide the appropriate and effective behavioral/medical support tailored to the needs and desires of each individual to enable each to live as independently as possible. Certified Nursing Assistants are expected to recognize when an individual is in a crisis and be able to utilize the appropriate comprehensive crisis management training, psychiatric, medical back up services and/or the crisis team involved with the individual.

Specific Duties:

  • Assist/monitor/teach individuals with preparation of daytime activities; encourage good personal hygiene, and behavior appropriate in their home or apartment.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Individual Support Plan, Behavior Support Plan and any other clinical or residential plan developed for the effective support of the individual.
  • Teach self medication skills according to ODP regulations, and when appropriate supervise in medication administration.
  • Assist/monitor/teach individuals engaging in daily chores.
  • Assist/monitor/teach individuals as needed in grocery shopping, menu planning, meal preparation and clean up.Teach and be supportive of basic nutrition.
  • Meet with individuals (as needed) on an individual basis to discuss concerns.
  • Assist/monitor/teach individuals in holding house meetings and informal discussion groups with peers.
  • Handle emergency situations appropriately, (according to AIMED and ODP policies). Utilize crisis interventions when necessary.
  • Perform daily record keeping (i.e. data collection, daily logs). Exchange information with next shift and/or with support staff.
  • Teach relationship building skills.
  • Teach community integration; assist with joining organizations of their choice.
  • Teach problem solving skills/resolving conflicts.
  • Provide leisure/recreational activities of individual(s) choice, increase individual’s self initiative in leisure activities.
  • Teach/monitor individuals self management skills (health/behavior management).
  • Teach individuals basic first aid, fire safety, emergency skills and sex education, and/or assist individual in locating a class (community resource.
  • Provide opportunities for individuals to have choices, make decisions in daily living and their future goals (i.e. assist individuals in day to day decisions).
  • Assists in ambulation of residents, turning, moving, and positioning residents and/or assists in lifting non-ambulatory residents into and out of beds, chairs, lifts, bathtubs, wheelchairs, and vehicles.
  • Provides personal hygiene to participants such as bathing, toileting incontinent residents offering bedpans/urinals, providing oral hygiene and grooming.
  • Assist individuals in building their self esteem.
  • Conduct and document monthly fire drills according to ODP procedures.
  • Report any consumer (individual) abuse (physical, emotional, sexual) or act of omission to the Allegheny County adult Abuse line.
  • Reports any change in participant condition to the Program Manager immediately.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output, as directed
  • Utilizes safety techniques in care of residents including proper body mechanics, locking wheelchairs and beds, cleaning spills, and correctly utilizing equipment.
  • Utilizes and adheres to infection control procedures and utilizes standard precautions.
  • Maintains resident/patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Attend mandatory training and site team meetings.
  • Implement OSHA regulations.
  • Lifting, snow shoveling and climbing stairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • The minimum professional qualifications for Certified Nursing Assistants is at least one year of Human Service work experience
  • Must be 21 years old.
  • Autonomy – ability to work without immediate supervision.
  • Interpersonal sensitivity (objective awareness of others, tactful interaction, ease in establishing limits).
  • Reliability and flexibility
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a van.
  • Crisis intervention training (i.e. non violent crisis intervention, positive approach, etc)
  • CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • Must clear ACT 33, 34 and 73 (criminal clearance).
