JOB TITLE: CERTIFIED NURSING ASST. DEPARTMENT: RESIDENT CARE

STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND JOB FUNCTION:

Working in accordance with established policies and procedures and/or specific instructions from the licensed nursing personnel, the CNA is responsible for the provision of direct resident care. The employee is the provider of hands-on resident care, including, but not limited to, all activities of daily living, planning, assessing, evaluating and providing quality nursing care. Employee participates in resident care plans, in-service education and disaster preparedness.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

This position is supervised by the Director of Nursing or his/her designee. Ultimate direction is provided by Administrator/Executive Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Job Functions:

  • During emergencies or natural disasters, employee may be required to report for duty as assigned by the administrator or designee for the duration of the disaster.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of personal hygiene and complies with department dress code.
  • Attends in-service training and education sessions as assigned.
  • Gives direct patient care in all aspects of activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, showering, grooming, dressing, toileting, dining (both feeding and hydrating for regular meals and snacks), transferring residents from bed into wheelchair and back, transferring from wheelchair to toilet and back, positioning residents and ambulation.
  • Assists in resident needs assessment and safety by observing and reporting all changes or unusual findings in, but not limited to, physical condition, attitude, psycho-social reactions and appetite to charge nurse. Maintains resident safety by the following: Utilizes proper techniques in relation to body mechanics when assisting with ambulation, lifting, repositioning or moving residents.

Essential Job Functions (Continued):

  • Reports accidents and incidents promptly.
  • Ensures call system is within reach of resident and answers lights promptly.
  • Maintains hazard free environment, bed in low position, security devices applied, restraints applied correctly and appropriately, reports broken or malfunctioning equipment to charge nurse, assures identification band is worn by resident.
  • May be required to work overtime in an emergency.
  • Maintains written records, activities of daily living flow sheets, diet, weight, bowel records, intake and output records.
  • Makes beds and keeps residents' rooms tidy and presentable.
  • Monitors resident alarm system and takes appropriate action as needed.
  • Makes rounds and tours on a regular basis assessing resident needs and appearance of facility, verifying resident needs are being met.
  • Assists nursing staff in taking height measurements, temperature, pulse and respirations of residents.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • May assist in reading to residents, writing letters, and running errands.
  • Assists nursing staff as directed to ensure resident and/or family understands applicable policies and procedures for fire evacuation and other life safety emergency plans.
  • May accompany residents to other facilities including, but not limited to, transfer to hospitals and to doctor/dentist appointments.
  • Transports residents to activities and functions.
  • Promotes resident participation in activities through demonstration of enthusiasm and personal participation.

SPECIFICATIONS

FACTORS: SUBSTANTIATING DATA:

Education: Must have the ability to read, write and speak English. Currently enrolled or completion of the Florida Nursing Assistance course and certificate. Must have certification 30 days after the course. Florida AIDS training is mandatory. Must understand verbal and written instructions. High school graduate preferred.

Experience: Experience with the aged population preferred.

Complexity: Should possess good judgment and recognize symptoms of adverse reaction to treatment and realize that errors may have serious consequences for residents. Must be observant and capable of reporting resident status.

Supervision received: Under the direct supervision of licensed nursing staff.

Contact Others: Responsible for assigned work and for providing assistance to other staff as required. Maintains direct contact with residents, their families, visitors, physicians, skilled therapists and other staff personnel. Must be courteous, friendly and helpful and be able to function in a team environment with a hospitality approach to interpersonal communication.

Errors: Probable errors could cause a decline in health of residents, resident dissatisfaction or discomfort, and significant expense to the facility. Errors in non-compliance with universal precautions and resident safety could have serious medical consequences for residents and employees.

Confidentiality: Works with confidential data whose disclosure would be contrary to the best interests of the residents and professional ethics. Actively promotes resident.

Sensory Demands: Must be capable of observing residents close and at a distance. Must have the mental capacity to pass the CNA certification examination Must have adequate hearing. Flow of work demands visual acuity, and employee must have the ability to handle simultaneous tasks in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to identify potential hazards, comprehend consequences and determine actions.

Physical Demands: Position requires the ability to perform complex tasks that require gross and fine motor skills. Must have the ability to lift 35 lbs. and assist in moving residents. Demonstrate physical dexterity in moving, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Procedures for lifting and transferring residents must be followed exactly with use of proper equipment. Able to withstand walking or standing for long periods of time.

Equipment: Medical equipment including but not limited to wheelchairs, blood pressure equipment, sanitizers, Geri chairs, and beds; emergency call system, telephones, etc.

Safety: Considerable responsibility for safety of others, including residents and staff members. The possibility of causing an injury to others is considerable. Regular ability to understand and to follow policy and procedures of fire & life safety, infection control, disaster preparedness, safety rules and regulations and department rules.

Working Conditions: May be exposed to infection, odors and to peculiarities in behavior and reactions of the aged. Sits stands and walks intermittently during the workday. Lifts residents in and out of bed and chairs frequently. Assists with emergencies.

Hazards: Injuries are possible due to the use of medical equipment, supplies, and contact with residents. This position is occupationally classified as being at risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Scope of Supervision: This is not a supervisory position.

Travel: Position requires no outside travel.
