Position Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing electronic medical record and operative reports to identify all services and procedures performed by the physician during surgical cases
  • Is knowledgeable of and able to apply various insurance guidelines to ensure the correct coding of surgical procedures
  • Assigning appropriate CPT-4 and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes that accurately describe the condition for which the service or procedure was performed
  • Identifying services and procedures provided that are not accurately documented in the medical record or operative report and advising the physician of documentation deficiencies
  • Analyzing denials and assisting insurance staff in resolving claim rejections related to coding issues
  • Identifying trends and ongoing problems related to medical documentation and recommending possible solutions
  • Maintaining coding certification through up-to-date continuing education opportunities
  • Adhering to and maintaining required levels of performance in both coding accuracy and productivity
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and complying with all HIPAA rules and regulations

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder (COSC) is required
  • Two years of orthopedic surgery coding experience is required
  • Experience in researching and applying coding rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of medical terminology including orthopedic surgical procedures, insurance, and coding guidelines
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Must be able to communicate and interact with physicians and staff effectively
  • Knowledge of personal computer applications and Electronic Medical Record
