Job description
The 4-H Agriculture Educator provides youth-centered education utilizing a variety of methods for the 4-H club program and community sites including schools, libraries and after-school programs. The Educator also serves as a team member and assists in all areas of the Association’s 4-H Youth Development Program. The educator also performs volunteer recruitment, training and support.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate’s Degree and two years transferrable program/functional experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Travel Requirements - Ability to meet the frequent travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required. Transports youth participants in Association vehicles.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Program Skills – Ability to effectively deliver related programs and trainings. Serve as an effective subject matter resource. Maintain program data confidentiality. Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts, including frequent collaboration with staff and outside organizations.
  • Communication & Marketing Skills - Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with presenters, program participants, employees and others. Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, volunteers, advisors, community and professional leaders.
  • Coordination Skills – Ability to effectively coordinate program efforts including data management and reporting, scheduling and coordinating programs and events, compiling and maintaining materials and resources, following financial reporting requirements.
  • Technology Skills - Proficiency or ability to learn and effectively use software including use of the internet, program related software, and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Youth Development, Education, Agriculture, Animal Science, or related field.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience working with volunteers and volunteer management.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery – 70%
  • Deliver existing 4-H programs including but not limited to agriculture and animal sciences, plus related 4-H County, District, and State special events
  • Provide 4-H program related education to new and existing 4-H Volunteers.
  • Apply existing subject matter knowledge to create lessons plans to deliver educational program.
  • Assist in teaching innovative educational programs when grant-funded opportunities arise.
  • Teach existing educational programs as defined utilizing a variety of proven educational methodologies.
  • Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource in related disciplines.
  • Provide standard responses and assist as needed in providing moderately complex nonstandard responses.
  • Interact effectively with program participants and volunteers to provide programming and support.
  • Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery.
  • May be involved in multidisciplinary team efforts within the Association or regionally to deliver program.
  • May assist in ensuring that program delivery is within scope of the statewide Plan of Work.
Program Evaluation – 5%
  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Interact with various constituencies to obtain their evaluation of programs and communicate evaluation results and findings with stakeholders.
  • May assist in designing evaluation framework, analyzing collected program evaluation data and in making recommendations for improvements.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Direction – 5%
  • Assist in the planning of major 4-H programs and events.
  • Provide input in planning the structure of delivering educational programs via various methods.
  • May provide input to planning unit budget based on program feasibility needs and assist in identifying opportunities for 4-H fund development activities.
  • Under the guidance of the supervisor, initiate effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses to facilitate continued programming efforts.
Management – 5%
  • Assist the supervisor with the management of 4-H programs and events.
  • Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise in the operation of the 4-H Youth Development programming, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with guidance of supervisor as needed.
  • Implement the existing volunteer recruitment, enrollment and selection process.
  • Assist supervisor with volunteer management.
  • Give guidance to volunteers and co-workers, including those performing similar work.
Coordination/Operation – 10%
  • Organize and coordinate activities related to 4-H Club Programming (i.e. County Fairs, Ag Days, Fashion Review, Public Presentations, etc.).
  • Coordinate the existing volunteer administrative processes including but not limited to required volunteer documentation.
  • Order and maintain inventory of supplies and marketing of 4-H Programs.
  • Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.
  • Submit program related expense receipts in a timely manner per procedure.
  • Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, radio, and multi-media efforts.
  • Perform general coordination activities including but not limited to attending staff meetings, working with other staff and general marketing of Extension programs.
Professional Improvement – 5%
  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details
