THE CLIENT: I’m a 50-year-old male professor at CSU in Food Science and Human Nutrition (see details at linkedin.com/in/jpeth). I work hard every day because I seek to make a positive impact in public health. For fun, I love good food/drinks and having good meals together at home or out. I also enjoy music, art, culture, spending time with friends and family. I injured my spinal cord (C-5) during an adventure race in 1999 and have since been paralyzed from the chest down. I have partial upper extremity function (shoulders, biceps), but no finger function. I can be independent for much of the day—perform work independently on my computer, propel a manual wheelchair with power assist, and eat using a utensil with some assistance. Yet, I need help with many things, from basic activities of daily living to more skilled care.
