Hours: 8am- 5pm typically Monday to Friday with potential to be asked to work holidays or weekends as needed.

Manatee County Beach Patrol Division’s staff is tasked with the responsibilities of victim rescue, emergency response and ordinance enforcement on Manatee Public Beach and Coquina Beach. Due to our knowledge base and proximity to the Manatee River, Sarasota Bay and Tampa Bay, the division's personnel are often seen responding to incidents on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key communities and even inland to some of our lakes and river areas.

In conjunction with the duties listed above, Beach Patrol personnel also deal with a wide array of other situations along the 17 plus miles of coastline, such as:


  • On-scene emergency medical care and transport to awaiting medic units
  • Medical response to water and land borne emergencies outside of beach boundaries.
  • Lost person searches
  • Stranded boater assistance
  • Evacuations of island communities and other low lying areas during times of emergency
  • Dive rescue
  • Traffic control
The Beach Patrol Captain is responsible for the direct supervision, training and participatory duties of the day-to-day operations of the Division and is responsible for the protection of life and enforcing all beach safety rules and ordinance violations on County beaches. The position is responsible for supervising advanced technical work in providing water rescue and administering basic emergency medical care with the possibility of transportation, as defined in Florida Statute, Florida Administrative Code, and local Medical Director-authored protocols. Responds to water and land-borne emergencies and effect rescues of beach goers, boaters, and patrons in the surf environment as well as on shore. You may serve in a lifesaving as well as a community-oriented capacity, and may assists the Beach Patrol Division Chief in the management and oversight of the Beach Patrol Division.

Job Description

What You Will Do


  • Provides direct employee oversight/supervision of the Lieutenants, Lifeguards/EMT's and Lifeguard/Paramedic’s in performance of assigned duties.
  • Maintains timecards and other paperwork and assists in their training. Reviews and evaluates employee paperwork for accuracy and completeness.
  • Arranges coverage for unscheduled absences and events. Submits work requests thru the Service Management System.
  • Assists in research/analysis of new equipment. Assists Division Chief with developing and implementing policies, procedures, protocols, and general orders for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the Division.
  • Ensures new and changed policies, procedures, protocols, and general orders are appropriately communicated to staff. Participates in the division's annual budget preparation and monitors expenditures; coordinates purchasing and receiving documentation.
  • Manages/controls scenes of incidents on and off the beach or in the water, acts as Incident Commander during emergencies.
  • Investigates and prepares reports for any work-related accident including, but not limited to, vehicle accidents, employee injuries, and injuries to patients.

Who You Are
  • Knowledge of all modern techniques, methods and practices of all phases of beach patrol and lifesaving.
  • Knowledge in the use and application of all equipment and of approved water safety and lifesaving methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of EMT skills or Paramedic (if applicable), practices and procedures; and the procedures used in the treatment and transport of the sick and injured.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanics and operating characteristics of vessels and vehicles; able to obtain a thorough knowledge of Anna Maria Island roadways and surrounding waterways.
  • Ability to perform basic water rescue work for long durations of time (including treading water and long-distance swimming). Ability to physically work for extended periods of time under all weather conditions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including public presentation skills, in order to interact professionally and effectively with all staff, the general public, and government regulators.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Skills


  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by five (5) years' experience as a professional ocean lifeguard in a recognized public safety or recreation program, with one (1) year of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the knowledge, abilities and skills cited below.
  • Must meet the Standards of the United States Lifesaving Association. Must have instructional skills and a working knowledge of computer skills (i.e.: WordPerfect, Windows, etc.).
  • Must have maintain Valid Florida EMT and AHA CPR certification or valid Paramedic and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certifications required.
  • Valid Florida driver's license required within 30 days of hire.
  • SCUBA and Rescue Diver certification required.
