POSITION SUMMARY:

The purpose of the camp counselor is to provide an educational experience through coaching, leading, and patience for all. The role is the Y’s “Safety Net.”

The Camp Counselor performs assigned functions on a daily basis focused on meeting the basic needs of the children assigned to their care. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Responsibility to meet the basic needs of each individual child and to assure their safety and well-being. Maintaining required caregiver-to-child ratios and group size. Providing a program that meets the developmental needs of all children in care. Interacting with each child in a positive manner. Knowing what activities all children are engaged in. Knowing the whereabouts of each child at all times. Being close enough to the children to provide for their safety.
2. Implements curriculum within the established guidelines.
3. Implements daily lesson/activity plans.
4. Supervises the children, classroom, and all activities.
5. Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
6. Follows all procedures and work instructions, using resources responsibly and effectively.
7. Conducts parent conferences, and maintains positive relationships and effective communication with parents. Engages parents as volunteers.
8. Maintains program site and equipment.
9. Maintains required program records.
10. Assists with planning, attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Meets educational and experience qualifications established by state law, must maintain 24 clock hours of professional development per year.
2. At least 18 years of age.
3. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications training within 30 days of hire date.
4. Bloodborne pathogens and child abuse prevention prior to start in classroom. Completion of state requirements prior to start date – this may include fingerprinting and TB test.
5. Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
6. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
7. Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
8. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
2. Physical activity – walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, reaching, etc.
3. Manual dexterity required for operation of equipment
4. Responsible for decision-making and communication
5. Perform service related activities
