General Description:
The Town of East Longmeadow is seeking a Building Facilities Plumber to perform journeyman level plumber work required to maintain, install, repair, or alter plumbing systems found in Town Departments

Primary Essential Functions:

  • The Plumber is the journeyman level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks associated with plumbing repair, and installation work.
  • Performs skilled plumbing and gas fitting duties involving installation, renovation or repairs in support of the overall maintenance of municipal buildings; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; works with Building Facilities Technician and other DPW employees.
  • The Plumber will test, repair, and install plumbing and gas systems; grease and steam traps, sinks, water closets, urinals, water systems, compressed air systems and lines, valves (shut off, mixing, relief, etc.), pumps (sump, ejector, circulating, etc.), laboratory type plumbing and gas fittings, dishwashers and other kitchen equipment, hot water heaters and boilers, coils (steam, hot water, evaporator, condenser), piping, fittings, flushometers, sanitary and drain systems, roof drains, propane (LP) gas systems, back-flow preventers, and all other types of plumbing and gas fitting components.
  • Performs regular preventative maintenance to ensure maximum efficiency of all plumbing, gas and heating systems; keep abreast of all safety building codes, asbestos laws and guidelines related to plumbing and heating trades; maintain all hand and power tools in good operating condition; perform all necessary paperwork as directed; maintain a clean and orderly work area; and perform all patching and repair that may be required as part of any job.
  • Monitors and complies with local building codes. Secures plumbing permits when required.
  • Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable codes and follows policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.
  • Checks completed work for accuracy.
  • Plans work schedule to coordinate with other departments to ensure timely completion of project.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned or requested by supervisor.

Required Education, Skills, Training and Experience:

  • A high school diploma and five (5) years of journeyman level experience and a valid journeyman plumbing level license or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Also repair, maintenance and installation of plumbing equipment, pneumatic control devices and sprinkler fittings.
  • Must have ability to work from blueprints or create own building plan when needed.
  • Knowledge of applied practice, techniques, tools, and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing equipment, operation of trucks and other equipment.
  • Math and geometry skills necessary for plumbing calculations. Ability to calculate costs and length of construction and projected completion date.
  • Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors and other departments.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of work hazards, safety procedures, and public safety matters.
  • Must have physical strength and ability to perform moderate manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable conditions and in all types of weather, as necessary.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be available for emergency call-outs during off time.
  • Able to organize assigned tasks, for completion alone or with help.

Certificates, License, Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts Class A, B, or D driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a first-aid/CPR card.
