The Opportunity
WSDOT Bridge & Structures Preservation Office is currently seeking to fill a Bridge Engineer 5 (In-Training) position in Tumwater, WA. This position is responsible to implement the statewide Bridge Load Rating program which encompasses over 3,200 bridges. This Lead Bridge Engineer will evaluate bridges to determine if there is a need for load posting or other traffic restrictions or structural modifications to increase live load capacity. This position also evaluates applications for overweight vehicle movement over state bridges to be crossed as well as participates as a Lead Inspector of abridge inspection team using routine and non-destructive inspection methods. In this role, you will support WSDOT’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation by ensuring the safety and reliability of the bridges on the state highway system.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Engineer will:
  • Perform load rating analysis.
  • Load rate structures to evaluate the safe capacity of bridges to safely carry truck loads on steel, concrete, and timber structures.
  • Evaluate bridges with low load ratings to determine if there is a need for load posting or other traffic restrictions, or structural modifications to increase live load capacity.
  • Develop conceptual and final design of bridge modifications needed to restore or increase live load capacity.
  • Modify load ratings as needed to reflect structural changes due to vehicle damage, widenings, constructed modifications and retrofits.
  • Receive and approve or reject applications for overload movement over State bridges to ensure safe passage of trucks without compromising the structural integrity of the bridges.
  • Provide information to the public and other interested parties on bridge design and loading matters.
  • Perform structural inspections on various types of bridges in a lead position.

Qualifications

This is an in-training position that offer a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Bridge Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Bridge Engineer 5. Candidates will be considered as a Bridge Engineer 3, 4 or 5 level, depending on their qualifications.

The qualifications for the Bridge Engineer 3 level are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering w/ emphasis on structural analysis and design.
  • Two (2) years of bridge design experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to attain one within 1 – 3 months of employment.

The qualifications for the Bridge Engineer 4 level are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering w/ emphasis on structural analysis and design.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington State in the Discipline of Civil.
  • Three (3) years of bridge design experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to attain one within 1 – 3 months of employment.

The qualifications for the Bridge Engineer 5 level are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering w/ emphasis on structural analysis and design.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington State in the Discipline of Civil.
  • Four (4) years of bridge design experience.
  • Certified Lead Bridge and Tunnel Inspector in the State of Washington with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a lead Inspector.
  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to attain one within 1 – 3 months of employment.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Master’s degree in civil engineering w/ emphasis on structural analysis and design.
  • Registration as a Structural Engineer in Washington State.

  • This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. These positions allow you to progress through the Bridge Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Bridge Engineer 5. Candidates will be considered as a Bridge Engineer 4 or 5 level, depending on their qualifications. The salary levels for each are:
    • Bridge Engineer 3: $69,756 - $93,840 annually
    • Bridge Engineer 4: $80,952 - $108,804 annually
    • Bridge Engineer 5: $89,292 - $120,132 annually
  • In additional to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 4% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2023.
