The agency is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the part-time position of Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/ Social Service Tech within the Fulton County Board of Health in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program.

General Description: Under general supervision, a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor acts as a paraprofessional who provides basic breastfeeding support to WIC participants.

This is an hourly position scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities

Counsels and gives breastfeeding information and support to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. Helps breastfeeding mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.


  • Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor
  • Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. Also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients
  • Refers mothers according to clinic-established protocols

Minimum Qualifications

Enthusiastic and positive about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers have a
positive experience.

Has breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of 6 months.

Is a current or former WIC participant.

Has good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Has reliable transportation
Bilingual (Spanish / English)

Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.

Fulton County Board of Health accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered.
