Immigration Enforcement (IE) is part of the newly formed Borders and Enforcement established on 01 April 2021 under the One Home Office transformation programme.

IE is the operational arm of the Home Office responsible for reducing the size of the illegal population and the harm it causes. Its key missions are:

  • Preventing illegal immigration through greater compliance with immigration laws
  • Maximising returns of immigration offenders and Foreign National Offenders from the UK
  • Tackling the threats associated with immigration offending

IE works with law enforcement and cross-government partners to tackle serious and organised immigration crime with a focus on bringing to justice those who exploit the vulnerable, for example cases of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Job description

We are delighted to offer Immigration Officer vacancies within the National Command & Control Unit (NCCU) which sits within Immigration Enforcement. The (NCCU) is the 24/7 365 a day Immigration Enforcement (IE) central point of contact for all UK Police Forces. We work with partners nationwide to enforce immigration laws fairly, protect and safeguard the vulnerable, and act to apprehend illegal migrants and Foreign National Offenders. Our unit also takes the lead on critical incident coordination and support across IE.

The NCCU Mission Statement is:

24/7 365 day a year. We Stop, listen, assess, and collaborate to tackle illegal migration. NCCU experts provide exceptional customer service and ensure the best outcome for the public.

We are the 24/7 365 day a year basis Contact Centre for Immigration Enforcement.

You will work as part of a team in a contact centre environment, answering telephone and email enquiries from all the Police Forces in the UK and other Law Enforcement Agencies on a 24/7 365 day a year basis.

Once trained you will use your Immigration expertise to give advice to Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies regarding an Individuals Immigration Status.

You will collate information on Individual’s Immigration Status and refer these cases for Enforcement Action to Local Immigration Teams.

You will gather information on Immigration Offenders who have committed serious crime and compile summaries for Chief Immigration Officers.

You will provide advice on an individual’s vulnerability and provide advice on Modern Slavery procedures.

You will be given the opportunity to take part in projects and improvement initiatives relating to the work of NCCU.

We are looking for someone with strong team ethics & personal resilience and discipline, who can work in a fast-paced, demand driven call centre environment. This is essential to support your colleagues and achieve NCCU’s overall aim of providing an excellent quality service.

You will be located at the Soapworks in Greater Manchester. Under Home Office hybrid-working practices. NCCU currently operates a hybrid working model and a minimum of 40% weekly attendance in the office is required.

The post is open to both full and part time staff. All staff are required to work the full length and range of shifts.

The NCCU is a uniformed unit and therefore any successful applicant will be required to wear the appropriate uniform whilst working in the office.

Parking availability at the office location

Applicants applying for this vacancy may wish to note that only limited car parking is available and is prioritised for staff working particularly early or late shifts and those working nights and weekends. No permanent car parking is available, and it will be individuals’ responsibility to make the necessary arrangements, to use public transport or other forms of travel.

Fixed Rota

Successful applicants will be compensated for working shifts through an Annual Hours Agreement, which is currently approx. 39%. This equates to approx. £9,500 on top of your basic salary. AHA is subject to a yearly review and can increase or decrease.

You will join the team on a fixed shift rota and will be expected to undertake the full range of shifts including Early, Mid, Late and Night shifts. This includes weekend and Public Holiday working. You will be placed on a rolling 6-week rota and will have your shifts mapped out 12 months in advance, although these can change subject to business need. There is financial compensation for shift working.

Our team enjoy working shifts as it gives them flexibility around start/finish times & days off during the week. This allows for caring responsibilities, managing personal appointments & commitments outside of work.

Selection process details

The interview

If you are successful at sift stage you will be invited to interview, which will be held Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams. The interview will use a blended approach of strength-based questions (no preparation necessary) and one behaviour-based question (Making Effective Decisions).
