Department Summary
UNT competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Conference USA. North Texas’ athletic programs are classified as NCAA Division I, the largest and highest division among all colleges and universities. The 46,000 square-foot Athletic Center located off South Bonnie Brae Street is the centerpiece of North Texas athletics. Athletics strives to conduct a competitive athletics program that promotes faculty, staff, student and community affiliation and participation with the North Texas Athletics. Provide facilities which attract the highest level of talent and allow student-athletes to perform at the highest level in practice and during competition.

Position Overview
Assists in providing leadership and direction for an assigned area within the athletic department. Responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of the department. Responsible for employees in the assigned area.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in in related field and three years of related experience; or any
equivalent combination of education, training and experience



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.


Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in counseling, sport management, higher education or related area; Previous background as a Learning Specialist; Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and accommodations for learning disabled; Knowledge of and ability to interpret assessments such as Woodcock-Johnson, IQ, and Aptitude measures, as well as understanding of Individual Education Plans/Summary of Performance documents.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with some evenings and weekends.

Job Duties

o
Provide consistent and frequent communication with the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics.

o
Provide leadership for the Learning Program including supervision of a full-time Learning Specialist/Tutor Coordinator, and a Learning Program Intern.

o
Collaborate with the sport psychology department on the screening/evaluation process for student-athletes. Advise student-athletes in the University of North Texas application/intake process for Student Disability Services. Provide student-athletes with information and assistance in the use of academic accommodations.

o
Serve as the Student Athletic Academic Center liaison to Student Disabilities Services, Sports Medicine, University Counseling Center, and local clinical psychologists who can assist and supplement the Learning Program. Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all members of faculty, staff, and community resources.

o
Assess the academic needs of current and prospective student-athletes, and develop learning strategies specific to their needs. Provide instruction related to study skills, time management, note taking, test taking strategies and overall academic success.

o
Develop Individualized Academic Plans, by requests, based on feedback from individual student diagnostic testing and learning profile to assist in the planning and implementation of academic services.

o
Provide academic support to assigned caseload of student-athletes through weekly meetings; Monitor academic progress of student caseload.

o
Provide appropriate communication, as needed, with Athletic Academic Advisors regarding at-risk students.

o
Act as resources and provide training as needed for staff and coaches in the areas of learning development, learning strategies and disability identification.

o
Maintain accurate records, files, and session reports. Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of tutorial staff.

o
Work in collaboration with Athletic Academic Advisors to determine appropriate course selection and academic support for students with learning concerns.

o
Assist in the planning and coordination of specialized programs for student-athletes (i.e. Summer Bridge/Transition).

o
Work with the Tutorial Coordinator to recruit, hire, train and evaluate tutors and academic coaches. Assist with development of tutor training materials.

o
Other duties as signed by Supervisor, Athletic Director, and/or members of the Executive Team.
