Assistant Park Manager provides administrative assistance to the District Supervisor of Oakwood Lakes State Park, Lake Poinsett Recreation Area, Lake Thompson Recreation Area, three Lakeside Use Areas, and several Public Water Access Areas. The Assistant Park Manager functions as a team leader over seasonal front line workers such as campground attendants and interns. Duties include coordinating campground and cabin reservations, POS training and issues, selling and auditing park entrance licenses, Flowbird Kiosk operations and maintenance, coding and preparing vouchers for payment, Cartegraph use and training, monthly reports, answering phone calls and emails, and selling merchandise. Conflict resolution with park visitors, volunteers, and/or seasonal staff. Maintaining park facilities, grounds, and equipment in cooperation with other permanent staff. Performs structural repairs and enhancements, preventative maintenance on equipment, landscaping, pruning and trimming trees, again with cooperation with other permanent staff. Performs safety inspections of buildings and grounds. May also helps with various projects at Lake Poinsett and Lake Thompson Recreation Areas.

The Assistant Park Manager works in a typical office environment on a daily basis. Other duties require that the Assistant Park Manager to work outdoors in all types of weather.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A detail oriented mindset. The ability to learn the POS system and to teach it to seasonal staff. Computer experience with Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Cartegraph, Facebook, and Windows 10. Public relations experience dealing with conflicts concerning customers, volunteers, and/or staff. Ability to learn the Department of Game, Fish, and Parks policies, rules, and regulations, then teach them to volunteers and staff. Ability to be organized and self motivated with problem solving skills.

Knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of park management;
  • office procedures; including purchasing and inventory management, voucher coding, and other fiscal operating procedures;
  • accounting methods; including cash drawer management and auditing;
  • public relations experience to communicate effectively with visitors, volunteers, and staff;
  • record keeping and report writing;
  • basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills;
  • vehicle and equipment maintenance;
  • safe operating guidelines for equipment.

Skill to:

  • communication skills to solve conflicts with visitors, volunteers, and staff;
  • use Microsoft Office, Facebook, Cartegraph, and Work Zone;
  • perform accounting tasks needed for park managing park revenue and expenses, plus convenience store inventory, revenue, and expenses;
  • interview, train, and evaluate seasonal staff and volunteers.

Ability to:

  • listen, learn, grow, and apply knowledge and accept constructive criticism;
  • demonstrate pride in their work while meeting deadlines;
  • demonstrate strong organization, attention to detail, and problem solving;
  • provide clear work direction to seasonal and volunteer staff based on their capabilities;
  • enforce park rules and regulations;
  • learn and assist other staff with maintaining buildings with basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs;
  • learn and assist other staff with diagnostic and repairs to a variety of vehicles and equipment;
  • work outdoors in all types of weather;
  • develop and give presentations as they relate to natural resources and park management.

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
