The Washington State Attorney General's Office's
Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division has an opening for an attorney in a full time position. The selected attorney will provide client advice, litigation support and representation to various education clients, including but not limited to the Community Colleges of Spokane, the Eastern Washington Historical Society (Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture), and Big Bend Community College. This position may also serve in a back-up capacity to other attorneys representing institutions of higher education.

This position is based in Spokane, Washington. Spokane is a vibrant and beautiful city that enjoys four distinct seasons and provides residents and visitors with world class outdoor adventures, including: fishing and whitewater rafting in the Spokane River; biking the Centennial Trail; snow skiing at nearby Mt. Spokane, Lookout Pass, Silver Mountain, 49 Degrees North, or Schweitzer Mountain; and hiking, boating or fishing in a host of nearby lakes and nature preserves. Spokane also offers great indoor activities: theater, including Broadway shows; live music; multiple exhibits; and the opportunity to taste Washington's renowned grapes and hops at a number of local wineries and craft breweries.

Duties

This position is housed in the Spokane Multi Divisional Legal Services Section ("MLS") and involves advice encompassing a wide range of topics, including academic personnel, contracts, athletics, public works, public records, open public meetings, student conduct, policy development, risk management, and other labor and employment matters not related to classified personnel or torts litigation. Education attorneys also advocate for their clients in a variety of proceedings that may include labor arbitrations, employee and misconduct hearings, or EEOC proceedings and may include representing clients in administrative proceedings and in state and federal courts. On any given day, the attorney may be called upon to provide advice on issues related to licensing, administrative law, constitutional rights, employment disputes, contracting and procurement, open government, student rights and responsibilities, intellectual property, and a variety of public sector business issues. The candidate selected for this position will be required to travel for various Board of Trustee Meetings and will sometimes be required to travel to other locations for hearings, meetings or trainings. Working with a higher education institution is a dynamic environment. The clients are mission-driven and sophisticated. They highly value responsiveness and clear communication.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the position requires highly developed and mature interpersonal skills, including superior communication and listening skills; the ability to work well with an array of personalities; strong analytical, research and writing skills; the ability to meet tight deadlines; and the ability to multitask. Applicants should have enough litigation background to be comfortable handling any non-tort litigation needs of the clients. Experience providing client advice is required. Applicants must have the ability to work independently; to be collegial and professional; to maintain a good sense of humor; and to collaborate within a team environment with colleagues, including colleagues located across the state. To serve as an Assistant Attorney General, one must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) Per AGO Policy, employees and volunteers of the AGO must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment. Being fully vaccinated means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Effective March 14, 2022, the AGO announced pursuant to its policy, that employees and volunteers must also receive a booster shot as a condition of employment. Employees or volunteers who are not eligible to receive the booster before their start date, due to required waiting times after receiving their initial vaccine(s), must provide confirmation of the vaccine type and date received so the AGO can calculate the date by which they must receive the booster. If you are selected to serve within the AGO as an employee or volunteer, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination and booster (if already received) before you are able to begin work. This Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. AAG salaries are set between $71,652 and $134,208. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.
