Animal Care and Enrichment Technician

Classification: Non-exempt

Summary

The Animal Care and Enrichment Technician is responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people and providing humane handling, care, and enrichment for all shelter animals. Assures all animals’ nutrition, housing, enrichment, and basic medical needs are met daily. Assists the public when admitting and adopting animals and promotes responsible pet ownership in conversations with customers. This is a front-line staff position that must maintain a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere that reflects professionalism and commitment to support the mission of the Beaver County Humane Society.

Essential Functions Animal Service

  • Cleans and sanitizes all cages, runs, and related areas according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Recognize and records any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any shelter animal in shelter software following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Recognize and records signs of illness, disease, injury, or unusual activity in shelter software following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Feed each animal as instructed and record changes in appetite.
  • Responsible for daily inventory.
  • Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
  • Perform general cleaning of building area.
  • Patrol shelter play yards daily, picking up any trash and stool material.
  • Maintain equipment used to complete job assignments and keeping such equipment and tools in good working condition. Keep equipment and tools put away in proper storage areas.
  • Interact with the public regarding inquiries for adoption. This includes discussion of positive and negative behavior of the animals, home environment needs, future training requirements and the possibility of not approving the adoptions.

  • Assists the Animal Enrichment Manager in reviewing behavior history and observations and create and carry out behavior management, modification, and enrichment plans for dogs, cats, and exotic animals.
  • Participates in shelter animal playgroups, conducts same species introductions
  • Assists the Animal Enrichment Manager and Shelter Manager in the development and implementation of new behavior programs.
  • Implement and carry out shelter animal enrichment programs to decrease stress, improve animals’ well-being and increase successful adoptions

Non-Essential Duties

  • Unpacking and stocking of shelter supplies and donations.
  • Provides ideas and suggestions designed to improve operational programs and working conditions.
  • Complies with all shelter safety rules.
  • Maintains appropriate files and records. Adheres to the files and records retention policy and procedures.
  • Assures a clean, orderly, and positive working environment.
  • Assist doctors, technicians, treatment assistants and other personnel with the administration of medications or with restraint when necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time position with an expectation of 40 hours per week.

Travel

No travel is required. OR X % travel required, including some local and some overnight.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Prior Animal Shelter/Day Care/ Kennel experience preferred.
