Job description

Love animals? Want to spend your day surrounded by wagging tails and soft purrs?

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), an independent, privately funded, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been serving people and pets in Silicon Valley for over 90 years. Having facilitated more than half a million animal adoptions, HSSV is leading the charge for animal welfare through community programs, creative marketing techniques, and effective homeless animal prevention strategies.

We are a passionate, high-performing team who believes that collaboration is key to our success. We do our best work by leveraging each other’s strengths and making sure to create opportunities for the work to be fun and meet our individual goals.

We take our mission seriously: To save and enhance lives – both two-legged and four legged! We envision a better world for animals and the people who love them, and we’re dedicated to making that vision a reality.

Are you eager to dive into increasing the number of animals find their forever homes?
If so, this could be the role for you! We are looking for energetic Animal Flow Foster Associates that want to be part of increasing our animal capacity. Animals enrich our lives just as much we impact theirs, rescue and foster programs allow us to save more lives by extending the resources to temporarily housing animals. An opportunity full of possibilities such as:

  • Gain experience growing a large foster program to support our community and extend the reach to the central valley where animals are in dire need of placement.
  • Support weekly rescue transports with our shelter partners, as well as matching and placing animals in need of foster care in suitable homes in a timely manner.
  • Be on the forefront of building a foster program and spearhead outreach with prospective and current foster families.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support the foster process such as the Volunteer Programs team.
  • Leverage systems and communications to track animal’s path throughout their stay with HSSV including medical and behavior.
  • Play a key part in working alongside highly skilled staff in our state-of-the-art shelter to make a large impact in the community and animal welfare.
  • Hone your skills and learn new ones through our investment in your learning more about animal welfare.

Do you have a shared passion for saving animal lives, especially those at-risk and making a difference in the community? Many times, some pets in shelter homes have behavioral and socialization issues, a fostering environment can give them a chance to be prepared for adoption. If this sparks your desire, this could be a great opportunity for you. Think of all the animals you can help!

Our foster program is growing, together we can learn along the way so besides the ability to adapt with flexibility, this opportunity needs:

  • Experience caring for animals a must; work in a shelter or kennel setting a plus.
  • Flexibility in learning new approaches to meet growing and changing needs.
  • Solid customer service foundation with excellent communication (verbal and written) and collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn fear free animal handling philosophy and techniques.
  • Current driver’s license and safe driving record; comfortable in driving large vehicles.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights of up to 50 pounds (floor level to waist height) with or without assistance and ability to bend, squat, lift and stand for the majority of the work schedule.
  • Proficient with computer database applications; ability to effectively use online tools and technology for communications and record-keeping (i.e. Excel, Box, Zoom, email); shelter or foster program systems a plus.

Our benefits are more than any program can offer – the biggest value you will experience on the HSSV team is making a difference…one paw at a time.

Work Days and Hours

This is a full-time opportunity; hours are flexible based on organizational needs. Hours typically include daytime hours and one weekend day.
