Job description
Overview:
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Department of Radiation Oncology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Associate/Advanced Practice Provider (ARNP or PA-C). The incumbent’s primary site of practice will be at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center South Lake Union located at 825 Eastlake Avenue East and is fully staffed by UW Department of Radiation Oncology faculty physicians.

The selected candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty as a Teaching Associate at the University of Washington with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The ARNP/PA-C is a certified physician assistant or advanced registered nurse practitioner with an integrated role which includes clinical and education components. The ARNP/PA-C works in collaboration with physicians and actively coordinates the complex care of cancer patients undergoing brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy, with a focus on gynecologic and gastrointestinal patients. While working in collaboration with physicians, the role will function independently in their responsibilities.

Under the general supervision of an attending physician, the incumbent will have the following responsibilities: provide perioperative patient assessment for anesthesia suitability; management of acute on-treatment medical issues; coordinate care among the multi-disciplinary team that includes anesthesiologists, medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and referring radiation oncologists; manage side-effects following post-treatment period; order appropriate laboratory and radiographic studies; prescribe medications; participate and assist in brachytherapy procedures; refer patient to other specialists as necessary. The incumbent will also refer patients to community agencies and other resources to promote optimal adjustment and functioning, document thorough dictation and chart notes in accordance with UWMC and UWP compliance requirements for billing.

NOTE: This position may require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) facility. Fred Hutch requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at a Fred Hutch facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the Fred Hutch policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment.

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.
