Advanced Network Concepts for Unmanned Air Systems (UAS)

The research objective is to develop innovative network concepts for small Unattended Air Systems operating in an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM)-like environment. We are particularly interested in all technologies such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE) for the Command and Control downlink that is suitable to UAS that weigh under 50 lbs. Laboratory facilities are available to support network experiments and simulations plus opportunities exist to participate in field trials. Our goal is to provide information that enhances understanding of the applicability and performance of ground-based cellular networks and alternate concepts for providing connectivity to low-altitude drones. The purpose of the field trials is to collect an array of data during flights in an operational commercial LTE network to enable quantitative analysis of performance characteristics along several dimensions. Simulations complement field trial results by allowing study of performance tradeoffs when the network is serving many ground and airborne entities (drones) simultaneously over a wide area. Simulations also enable rapid testing of parameter and feature changes that are more difficult to study in an operational commercial network. Simulations are performed to: Quantify downlink signal to interference plus noise ratio distribution, Study the impact of uplink power control design on network interference, and Quantify handover performance differences between ground and airborne UAS.
