Job Summary:

The Accounting Team Lead supervises, tracks and evaluates day-to-day activities of the accounting function and team members. The Team Lead has the responsibility of developing and implementing systems for collecting, verifying and reporting accounting information. This position can be a Remote or Hybrid opportunity.


Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including:
    • month and end-year process
      • workload of accountants
      • close schedules and achievement of dates
      • communication across the organization of information needed by specific dates
    • general ledger ownership
      • ensure accuracy of account coding in ledger
      • monitor accruals / re-accruals / recurring entries
      • ensure GAAP compliance
    • payroll and benefits recording and accrual
    • oversee sales/use tax compliance as well as business licenses
    • revenue and expenditure variance analysis and explanations
      • during the close to ensure completeness and accuracy
      • after close to complete the monthly package
    • account reconciliations completeness and accuracy
      • review of account reconciliations prepared by the team
      • preparation of assigned account reconciliations
    • conduct monthly departmental reviews with owners – cost trends, variances to forecasts, etc
    • other assignments as identified
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports or statements
  • Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies and principles
  • Coordinate and complete annual audits
  • Provide recommendations for improvements to processes and reporting
  • Improve systems and procedures and initiate corrective actions
  • Assign projects and direct team members to ensure compliance and accuracy
    • make recommendations for improvements for team member performance
  • Meet financial accounting objectives
  • Establish and maintain fiscal files and records to document transactions
  • Active role in annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting process; consolidation, managing operating expense forecast, and various reporting requirements


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment either in Elmhurst, Illinois or Farmington Hills, Michigan, with hybrid options available
  • This requires the use of typical office equipment such as a computer, laptop and cell phone


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced computer skills on MS Office, with a heavy focus on Excel, business intelligence tools like PowerBI
  • In-depth understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and accounting software, preferably NetSuite
  • Proven knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles, practices, and standards
  • Problem solving/analysis
  • Sense of urgency and desire to work in a fast paced environment
  • Team centered/work well with co-workers and cross functionally to resolve issues and problems
  • Customer service focus
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Leadership characteristics
  • Ability to gain buy-in from other parts of the organization

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Four or more years of increased accounting experience, and proven ability to lead a team
  • Above average skills in Microsoft applications; Excel and PPT
  • CPA or MBA preferred
