Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • 3-5 Years of Teaching Experience.
  • Development and facilitation of STEM professional learning sessions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of STEM as an instructional framework.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational technology tools, resources, and classroom application.
  • Must be self-starter, capable to work both independently and be a team player.
  • Must be willing to work from home and live in the the southwest NC region, which includes the following counties: Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Cherokee, Graham, Swain, Madison.
  • Must be willing to travel approximately 35-40% of time to the following counties: Clay, Graham, Swain, Madison, Yancey.
  • Strong public relations skills, and outstanding organizational skills.
  • The ability to establish and maintain strong positive rapport with a variety of partners.

License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Education Administration, Instructional Technology, or related field.
  • 5+ Years of Teaching or Instructional Coaching Experience.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects.
  • Experience in working with grant-funded projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Academic Innovation Specialist serves as an academic support liaison and STEM leader for participating GEAR UP districts, the regional STEM Task Force, and GEAR UP administrative team.

GEAR UP is a federally funded grant program through the U.S. Department of Education. Funded in September 2020, the grant will partner with 10 western NC school districts and 8 higher education institutions to provide college access and academic support services for 6th through 12th graders through September 2027. In addition, through sustainability and systemic change efforts, GEAR UP aims to remove barriers for future generations of students that follow.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

LEADERSHIP
  • Build strategic, positive, effective partnerships with school staff, administrators, and teachers in order to ensure academic support is comprehensive, coordinated, data-informed, and non-duplicative.
  • Serve as a system-level advocate for developing a culture of student success by ensuring GEAR UP services are embedded into existing structures at the school and district level, including supporting teachers and staff to incorporate best practices in STEM.
  • Responsible for maintaining a strong relationship with Appalachian State University GEAR UP and district partners by regularly attending meetings and communicating with district/school staff.
  • Participate in regular professional development opportunities to stay abreast of updates and the changing landscape of STEM and academic innovation.
  • Support the development of strategic plans to individual GEAR UP schools and ensure alignment of GEAR UP to local education agency goals.


COMPLIANCE
  • Maintain adequate service and financial records in accordance with federal, state, institutional, and GEAR UP policies.
  • Work with GEAR UP finance staff to ensure all reimbursement and expense documents are submitted on time and with minimal error.
  • Monitor progress toward cost-share commitments and budget spending.
  • Communicate regular updates to the Assistant District of Curriculum and Instructional Design to ensure that programmatic efforts and associated documentation meet GEAR UP policies and federal obligations.

STRATEGIC SERVICES
  • Implementation of 7-year strategic and annual plans for each of the five assigned districts; addressing school specific goals as well as GEAR UP grant research goals.
  • Create and coordinate STEM professional learning experiences for middle and high school teachers that align with the schools’ strategic plan and GEAR UP grant goals.
  • Coordinate awareness, access and support in the participation of STEM-focused competitions and events.
  • Monitor and support all grant funded research interventions specifically aligned with academics (Math I).
  • Manage professional learning partnerships with 3rd party providers, ensure services are of high quality, and are in alignment with GEAR UP STEM vision and federal grant guidelines.
  • When appropriate, offer direct student services opportunities that encourage and motivate student engagement in STEM and academics (e.g. summer coding camps, tutor.com, etc.).

EVALUATION
  • Collaborate with GEAR UP Coordinators to ensure all teacher services are accounted for and entered into the GEAR UP database within 30 days of delivery.
  • Assist in the coordination and administration of evaluation instruments for assigned districts.
  • Responsible for the collection and submission of usage data (in accordance with Appalachian GEAR UP policies) for electronic services purchased using district GEAR UP funding.
  • Provide regular data updates to districts and GEAR UP coordinators to keep them informed and engaged in discussions regarding strategic alignment of GEAR UP goals with district goals.
  • In collaboration with the GEAR UP Assistant Director and other GEAR UP staff, engage in regular data reviews to monitor progress toward GEAR UP goals, identify gaps, and promote the implementation of data-informed, research-based services to strategically address those gaps.
  • Monitor and work to improve response rates for teacher surveys.

OTHER
  • Assist as needed with the delivery of teacher and student services such as camps, after school events, field trips, competitions, workshops, etc.
  • Regular travel to assigned schools (Clay, Graham, Swain, Madison, Yancey) represents approximately 35-40% of time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
