GSNENY operates two summer overnight camps. Some staff positions can work at both camps over the course of this summer. Hidden Lake Camp: Nestled on four hundred acres in the southern portion of the Adirondack Park, Hidden Lake Camp comprises a small private lake, streams, low mountains, woodlands, and beautiful hiking trails. The lake is an ideal setting for swimming, canoeing, and stand-up paddle-boarding, and kayaking. Camp facilities include a large playfield, high and low ropes courses, platform tents and lean-to units, a modern dining hall, a health lodge, a shower house, and buildings for activities and programs. Campers range from second through twelfth grade.

Summer Camp dates at Hidden Lake Camp are: June 25th- July 29th. These dates include pre-camp training and post-camp clean-up. Positions at residential summer camps also include room and board, which is not taxed.

Employees who work the entire summer are eligible for a $165 retention bonus!

PURPOSE: Supervise campers assigned to their group. Unit Counselors will facilitate activities designed to help campers to understand and live up to the Girl Scout Promise and Law and to develop an appreciation for and enjoy the outdoors in accordance with the Leadership Development Model (girl led, led by doing, cooperative learning).

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Unit Leader/ Assistant Camp Director

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum age: 18 or 17 and a high school graduate.
  • Willingness to abide by the policies and practices of the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York, Inc.
  • Desire and ability to work with and relate to children and adults in an outdoor environment.
  • Experience working with children.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Prior experience or interest in the Girl Scout Camping program helpful.
  • Certified Sex Offender Registry and criminal background checks will be conducted.
  • Prioritize the needs of the camp and the positive camper experience at all times.
  • Good health and stamina are necessary to work in the camp setting.
  • Required to stay on property during hours of operation and during the weekly overnight experience.
  • The acceptance of irregular work hours.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at resident (overnight) camp.

PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Helps campers learn to respect the rights of others and to understand the differences and similarities of other campers.

Teach activities through the use of the Girl Scout Camping program.

Plan activities and programs based on the weekly theme, camp brochure and the Girl Scout programming in accordance with the Girl Scout Leadership Model (girl led, led by doing, cooperative learning).

Responsible for the health and safety of campers. Is actively engaged in all patrol activities (swimming, boating, crafts, nature, archery, and follows direction of program staff) to ensure camper safety during all activities.

Coordinate, with input from campers and unit staff, unit activities that will be done throughout the week. This includes, but not limited to overnights, cookouts, traditional camp activities, and hikes.

Assists with the planning and implementation of activities as needed under the direction of the Unit Leader/Assistant Camp Director.

Maintain unit housekeeping, sanitation, and care of supplies.

Apply behavior management techniques to conflicts with children when necessary. Report incident to supervisor immediately.

Reports any accidents promptly to the Health Supervisor/Camp Nurse and Camp Director.

Report suspected child abuse to supervisor immediately.

Keep records and prepare reports as required.

Attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Participates in the total camp program including pre-camp, open house, and post-camp.

Required to stay on the property during hours of operation including overnight weekly experience.

Accepts other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Unit Leader/ Assistant Camp Director.

Assist with closing of camp at the end of the season.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist the campers in emergency situations.
  • Lift 35 pounds.
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control, and ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Participate in structured and unstructured activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and visitors to camp.
  • Accept and follow directions both in verbal and written form.
