Job description

Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. We are designing a completely new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft tailored to the mobility needs of future cities. This allows passengers a seamless intermodal journey that safely transports them to their final destination. We fuse research in autonomy, robotics, aviation and services to define a new category of mobility for the world’s communities. We believe in creative thinking and collaboration to help build a better mobility experience for everyone, improving people’s ability to move – whether for work or play.

What we do:

The Electric Propulsion team is responsible for design, integration, qualification, and certification of the energy storage system integration, high-voltage power distribution, electric motor, and motor control electronics. The Senior Thermal Analysis Engineer participates in crafting the thermal design of the future of electric aircrafts. You will work closely with Airframe, Battery Research & Technology, Dynamic Systems, Assembly & Integration, and System Safety teams to ensure the thermal performance of the electric propulsion sub-systems is accurately managed in all operating modes.

What you can do:

  • Collaborate with all aircraft teams to determine their thermal needs including the airframe, avionics, energy storage, and electric propulsion

  • Provide thermal and fluidic analysis and suggest modifications based on the analysis, previous experiences, and standard processes

  • Participate in research and design of innovative compact heat rejection components, fluidic distribution systems, etc.

  • Design, analyze, and optimize thermal stack up resistances for different applications

  • Develop technical requirements and specifications for different sourced components (pumps, fans, radiators…), manage system interfaces, and address development risks and mitigations

  • Develop test plans, participate in qualification testing, and analyze test data

  • Identify weight opportunities to achieve optimal propulsion system efficiency

  • Derive system level requirements and specifications based on vehicle Key Performance Parameters (KPPs), battery system thermal performance, and electrical motor and motor control system thermal performance

  • Collaborate with suppliers/partners to ensure program milestones are achieved

  • Work with flight test engineers to define instrumentation requirements and interfaces

  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in electric transportation, aerospace, or similar (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)

  • Experience with 3D CAD part design and assembly

  • Experience with the life cycle of thermal management systems development, qualification, production, and product support

  • Expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and other multi-physics modeling software

  • Exceptional understanding of thermal engineering principles and ability to apply that knowledge to quickly establish feasibility and move projects along

  • Ability to effectively lead supplier and product development efforts

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Self-motivated and forward-thinking personality

You may also be able to contribute:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. preferred

  • Seven (7) or more years related experience preferred

  • Familiarity with practical application of DO-160 desired

  • Experience with thermal testing and instrumentation preferred

  • Experience in one or more of the relevant thermal systems (heat exchangers, compressors, blowers, valves, filters…)

  • Experience with different thermal and protection materials, their applications, and limitations
