Position Description

This Library Manager 3 is a Civil Service position located at Nashville Public Library. Position performs supervisory and administrative duties. When located in Branch Services, the position oversees the daily operations of a large 20-25,000 sq. ft. library branch and may oversee multiple community library branches. When located at the Main Library, this position oversees the daily operations of a system-wide function in a major area of the division.

Located in the heart of Music City, The Nashville Public Library boasts 4 million visits annually and maintains a collection of 2 million items, including a one-of-its kind civil rights collection. The Metro Archives, a premier division of the Public Library, is the official record keeper of Nashville’s history, maintaining records of enduring historical value. Nashville Public Library is central to the city's art, history, education and literary culture, earning it the title of Gale-Cengage and the Library Journal's 2017 Library of the Year. The library periodically hosts best-selling authors, and during the summer months offers free lunchtime concerts featuring everything from salsa to soul, to blues to Bach. Typical Duties

  • Supervises direct report employees at a large area branch or division and the supervisors at the selected community branch libraries or divisions.
  • Schedules work hours to ensure that all public areas are covered.
  • Evaluates employees, counsels with and disciplines employees as needed, and approves leave requests.
  • Performs difficult or complex professional work in his/her branch or division.
  • Develops and maintains library materials collections.
  • Assesses staffing and physical resource needs of their area.
  • Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget.
  • Provides Reference and Reader’s Advisory service to the public.
  • Receives and resolves complaints from the public.
  • Performs administrative duties, writes reports and performs statistical analyses.
  • Plans programs and activities.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Promotes programs and services for the library in the community.
  • Keeps abreast of new trends in Library and Information Science.
  • Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Master’s in Library Science or Master’s in a Library Science field, degrees must be accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional library experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • No Substitution

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library service, library resources and collections
  • Strong public relations and customer service skills
  • Possess strong leadership abilities, keep accurate records, write detailed reports, and allocate resources
  • Fluent bilingual language skills
