JOB BRIEF
Coordinates patient care activities to ensure quality and safety at the DCH RMC and at the DCH NMC facilities.
PERFORMANCE PLANNING
Coordinates patient care activities to ensure quality and safety at the DCH RMC and at the DCH NMC facilities. Serves as a clinical resource for nursing staff on all units. Supports patient care activities. Ensures safe staffing for all units. Facilitates patient flow by working with Patient Accommodations, Emergency Department, surgery, physicians, and nursing unit leaders to provide appropriate patient placement. Interprets department policy and procedures for all staff. Participates in performance improvement activities. Functions as a patient advocate, demonstrates and promotes an awareness of and compliance with patient rights. Serves as the initial Emergency Management leader during unforeseen events such as severe weather, fires, etc.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Interviews, selects, hires, and retains employees

  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Manages front-line operations of the area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals, 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision.
  • Collaborates with coworkers in the schedule development and coverage of appropriate level of Supervisor support at NMC and RMC facilities (24/7).
  • Reviews staffing patterns, census and acuity of nursing units to ascertain staffing is consistent with the patient needs. Plans and adjusts staffing to provide continuous coverage of a department.
  • Adheres to department budget, productivity and overtime goals and makes recommendations for cost-saving and budget planning needs.
  • Conducts clinical safety functions such as sitter approval and review.
  • Promotes good public relations with patients, visitors, physicians and the community.
  • Investigates and resolves patient complaints.
  • Investigates patient care incidents and intervenes appropriately.
  • Works well with others, utilizing interdisciplinary approach, in defining and working toward common goals; strives to maintain good interdepartmental relationships.
  • Serves as the clinical supervisor for a defined group of Clinical Resource Team staff and assists with communication, mentoring, competencies and evaluation of these employees.
  • Maintains employee contact by meeting with staff members and makes frequent rounds on all units.
  • Provides feedback to the staff; assists in increased staff awareness of topics and matters of significance to them.
  • Serves as a role model and mentor for staff. Continually evaluates the attitudes, morale and interpersonal relationships of staff members; promotes methods to improve in these areas; consistently motivates staff in a positive manner.
  • Promotes a culture of safety by maintaining a keen awareness of potential safety risks and process issues, by speaking up and by reporting these concerns via appropriate channels.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the Medical Staff regarding patient care, policies/procedures, protocols, bed availability, and other departmental issues.
  • Provides physical, campus-wide assistance to crisis/problem situations in an appropriate manner.
  • Provides input to the appropriate person(s) regarding equipment/supply needs for all age groups and patient populations served and for procedures, equipment, supplies, and medication when needs arise after hours.
  • Maintains required records and reports.
  • Actively participates on DCH committees as needed.
  • Serves as a role model and mentor for staff. Continually evaluates the attitudes, morale, and interpersonal relationships of staff members; promotes methods to improve in these areas; consistently motivates staff in a positive manner.
  • Assures compliance with various quality standards and regulatory agency requirements within the unit (TJC, Competencies, Standards of Nursing Practice, Structural Indicators, etc.)
  • Consults with Administrator on-call for administrative issues/problems.
  • Serves as patients/family liaison by assisting with guest room accommodations, meal tickets, transportation needs, etc.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of clinical equipment and computer systems and serves as a resource for staff by providing just-in-time training.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development; identifies learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them.
  • Assumes other responsibilities and duties that relate to nursing administration as required.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues, and with self.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Must possess good communication skills and demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and concepts of appropriate prioritizing. Anyone hired as of April 2016 or later, must have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Health Related Field or must be actively working on a Bachelor’s degree with completion within 4 years of hire. 5 years experience as a registered nurse with proven leadership and management skills.
Must have current Alabama RN licensure. ACLS and PALS are preferred. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental
Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, lab chemicals, and hazardous material. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
Physical
H-Heavy Work – Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those of Medium Work.
Physical presence onsite is essential. Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking on a concrete floor covered with tile or carpet (at least 80% of the shift). Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Is able to push stretcher/wheelchair with an average adult patient. Is able to do frequent stooping and on occasion crouching, crawling, or kneeling. Ability to reach reasonable distances in any direction. Ability to run in emergency situations. Must be able to move fingers in a coordinated manner. Must have the ability to feel and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with fingertips.

Includes demonstrating leadership skills, delegating to team members, addressing conflict, communicating with all types of personalities, and being responsible for outcomes/results.
